    Hey all,

In the User Manual it says that the Media Control Buttons to the Left of the keyboard can play CD's and DVD's with the computer on, or off. By Off I am assuming it means you can play a CD or DVD with out booting the OS, like HP's have been doing for quite some time now.

I have yet to be able to get ahold of Toshiba Tech Support in order to ask them, So I thought I'd post and see if anyone else was able to get this to work, or if the User manual is just misleading?

    Thanks,

    -TheChad

used to work good on my p10, with the unit off, just hold down the cd/dvd button and it used to just give power to the drive so u can insert a cd and then just play stop etc. as needed. will try with my a100, and get back to you.

I pressed and released the media button, and the laptop just powered on and booted as if I had pressed the power button. I didn't try holding it down...

    Anyone?

I called Toshiba Tech Support, which was a waste of time. They don't have a CLUE what they are talking about.

Their way to fix it, is the all soo lame, "Lets reload the entire computer, because I don't have a clue how to trouble shoot"

I can't find ANY documentation on the internet as to this problem.

I know it is SUPPOSE to work by pressing the Media button with the power off, and is suppose to load some sort of DVD player with out loading the OS.

When I press the media button, it loads Windows Vista, and after logging into my username, it opens WinDVD. Obviously this voids the entire point!

If the system is loading a DVD player pre OS, then the DVD player would have to be in the BIOS Firmware right? If this holds true, then reloading the whole HDD as tech support suggests, would be Ill effective anyway!

I'd apperciate any help on this..

    Thanks,

    -TheChad

Thats the only way to fix it though. If you got the express play CD with your laptop, boot from it, and see if it'll let you re-load it. If the partition is still there, it *shouldnt* need to format the entire drive. If it isnt though, you will need to back up your data, and start fresh, if you want to install it.

So it should have a CD just for Express Play? Should I have 2 partitions on my HDD? Windows only shows 1.

    Thanks,

Yeah, it *should*. Some people have said they never got one though, so i guess its hit or miss. And you cant see the partition in windows because its hidden. In fact you cant see it in MOST software(even ubuntu, and norton ghost didn't see it on mine) but it is there... or at least it should be. If it isn't, then as i said, you'll need to start over. If you have not been doing anything with the partitions(like fully formating the drive, or using partition magic) then you prob. just somehow got it corrupt. Happened to me a few months ago. Luckily all i had to do was boot into the CD, and hit reinstall and it fixed it in less then 30 seconds.

Hmm...I hadn't tried the quickplay feature on my U200 until I read this post. I just tried it and it doesn't work, it boots in to Vista.

my s2246's express play does not work either.
Those dang buttons took up so much real estate too, what a waste of space.
I only got two CDs, I don't think they are the express play CD. I'll check later today.

So it sounds like I am not the only one that Toshiba has dropped the ball on....

Now the question is, What do you do to fix it if you don't have an "Express Play" CD? Does the System Restore CD contain the Express Play Partition?

Why are soo many Toshiba models not coming loaded properly?

You have to make your own disk for backing up the express play. Look in All Programs. It will say recovery disc creator ( express media player). If it's there you are good to go, if not then you've got no way to make them.

So If it's not there... Than Toshiba is false advertising by saying you can play DVD/CD's with out booting? How is it that at random some models work, and others don't?

I see a 1.46 GB partition on my system.
I can't find anything related to express play or recovery disc under programs.

    hmmm...
In the user manual - it has a note.
    *Available on certain models

Did you ever get an answer as to how to correct the problem? I have a similar problem. After replacing my HDD(fatal crash), and installing XP Home English on my EX/2515LDSTW (Japanese version, came with XP Japanese), I can't get the quickplay to reinstall with the original recovery disk. And of course, the response from Toshiba Japan is to send it in to be restored to original condition(at cost). PLS let me know if you figured it out.
