M pioneer dvr-k17 drive has stopped reading CD's but still reads dvd's, from what I hear i think this drive is about done. I was wondering what I should replace it with. I saw the dvr-k06 which is a slot loading version with the same specs. I need something that is cheap and somewhat reliable. I saw some Sony/NEC drives but I think they were EIED and ATAI, and i believe this drive is IDE. I need to know whats the cheapest option I can go with that can still burn dvd's. If you guys could help me out that would be great, thanks a lot!

The DVR-K17 is a standard 1/2" notebook burner with IDE (ATAPI) connector.

Slot loaders are an option, but they tend to noisier and not support 8cm discs.

You can chose something from these at Newegg. Just avoid the SATA models which have a different interface. The Samsung SN-S082H and the Optiarc AD-7590A-01 have the most orange blobs.

There's some guidance here on swapping the burner.

Thanks for the update. I can't help with itunes. I use nero for my burning and you could have got the OEM version very cheap with the burner. Can you reinstall itunes? Perhaps it is still looking for the old burner.

As for the HDD, put the old one in an enclosure as a backup after cloning it onto something bigger. The 320GB HDDs are now reasonably prices and give a useful boost to performance.

I did get a free copy of Nero 7 but I don't like installing programs I really need. Ill look into the 320GB, thanks! Ive installed and uninstalled i tunes several times. Apparently this a relatively common problem that doesn't have a known fix yet.
