Is anyone familiar with this Toshiba model? My girlfriend is looking to get a computer for school work and is looking at this laptop at best buy

I had a Toshiba a while back when they put the Pentium 4's in there (needless to say it was bad). Do Toshiba laptops, specifically this one, still have overheating issues? She is deciding between this one and this HP:

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you Toshiba experts

Toshiba had some overheating issues for several years. A nasty class action suit seemed to remedy the problem and it's been at least three years since I've heard of any problems from Toshiba owners. I bought my best friend a Satellite A305-S6844 as a gift about six months ago and it runs cooler than my Dell Studio 15 (which doesn't generate much heat, either). His A305 has a 2.1GHz T8100 processor and 512mb ATI HD 3650 graphics card, both of which can generate a lot of heat. It takes an effective cooling system to dissipate the heat, especially from the ATI card.

The model you linked at Best Buy has a 2.0GHz Intel T5800 and a 256mb ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3470 graphics card. My Dell has the 256mb ATI HD 3450, which is almost identical to the 3470. Even with a 2.5GHz Intel T9300 and the ATI HD 3450, I never have any noticeable temperature increases. You're good to go- and at $799, that's a helluva deal for a sharp looking notebook with 4GB of RAM and a discrete graphics card!!!

I think you should go for it!

I'm curious, have you seen it in person yet? I think I like the new design "kinetic pattern" as Toshiba calls it, but I've yet to see and touch it up close. It's certainly not boring to look at. :D

I have not seen it in person yet, though I intend to take a closer look now that I have heard good things. I'll let you know what I think of it up close. Thanks for the help!
