    Hi,
I have Toshiba satellite A45 with dvd writer for last 2 yrs.
I am not using this laptop lately & suddenly I came to know that the DVD writer is not working properly. It detects & plays CDs, audio CDs, VCDs apparently but no kind of DVD. I tried DVD-Video & few of written DVD-Rs. But it doesn't even detect them. I tried with unistall/reinstall driver & remove/reset of drive itself but it doesn't work. What could be the problem here? Please help me.

Which drive is it? Can you see it in Windows Explorer? If you feel comfortable, uninstalling the ide channel may help. Windows will find and re-install it when re-booted. Could be the drive has just failed. Been known to happen.

Try reinstalling the drivers from either Toshiba's site or your recovery CD and see if that has any effect on the problem.

Thanks guys for reply. I tried resitting the drive along with reinstalling the driver as well. but apparently it soesn'r seem to work.
As I said before, the drive is detecatble on computer. Only problem is with detecting/playing any sort of DVD. It doesn't detect at all. Is it strange or what? Any thoughts?

    Hey Zazonz,
I' m sorry but I didn't understand what do you mean by deleting IDE channel. If you could explain a little more to me, I can try that. Thanks again.

Hmm...from your description, it seems like the laser for reading DVD's might have burnt out. CD's and DVD's do need different lasers(varying wavelengths). Laser failure is very rare but *maybe* in your case this might be the cause of your issues.

The Ide connector is what connects your optical drive to the motherboard. Sometimes, it can cause issues. It is worth a shot.

Most all Toshibas have mat****ta drives (matusha, I think). The newer Qosmios and some Tecras have some drives made by Toshiba themselves though.

I think it is not Matusha :p but M/a/t/s/h/i/t/a. IMO the best dvdrw drive is nec 6500/6650 series though it doesn't support dvdram

Ah, I got close! :p On an off topic note, I used to spell Fujitsu "Fujistu" - messed up the "T" and "S".
