I have the customizable A500 with i7 processor and Nvidia 330 graphics card. To say I've only had bad luck with this laptop is an understatement. The first one I received kept randomly shutting off so I returned it. Don't remember what the problem was with the second one but I returned it. On the third one, the DVD player wouldn't open so I returned it. Now on my 4th one, it also randomly shuts off. There is no set pattern that makes it do so. It could be on for an hour and then will just shut off like someone pulled the power cord out. Other times it might be fine all day then suddenly the next day, after 2 hours of use, it shuts off. This last time it shut off 5 times in a row after being on for less than 10 seconds. I love everything about this laptop but have no idea why it would just shut off. It is not overheating as far as I know (and I use a cooler with it) and is too new (I end up returning them after less than a week!!) to have collected much dust. I have read many problems about the Nvidia 300 series and Windows 64 bit (which I had) but none say that their computer just shuts off -- they all received a message saying the Nvidia driver stopped working and has recovered or something similar, or they get the BSOD. I've not had any of these issues -- only random shut offs. I think it would be a big coincidence that I would receive at least 2 laptops with bad motherboards. Could the shutdowns be the result of a bad graphics driver? Toshiba of course was no help and only had me change my power settings to "Never" shut down.

I also recently bought a Vostro 3400 i5 with 310 graphics card and Windows 64bit but don't have this problem nor any of the other problems so many others complained about (Nvidia kernel crash, BSOD, etc) so I think it is more likely a hardware problem with some component Toshiba is using. I haven't read of anyone else having this problem with their A500 -- which I also think is odd. Am at a total loss...

Well, you say you have no overheat issues. It can be a virus which just kills your system. What about just return it again? And, I personally don't like Toshiba. And as you said, they have no service. I bet that many NBR users know more then them.
Anyway, let uss know how it turns out for you.
