I've decided to switch from Sony laptops to Toshiba.
The A605 is a little larger and heavier, but not by much. They both use the 9400 and other features are similar, but the R600 is almost twice the price (mag drive).
The plan is to buy an A605 and later install an SSD. Since there's no music, videos, or games on the laptop, even a small SSD should be ok.
HOWEVER, I definitely want XP rather than Vista, and did not see XP media included with the A605. How much of a hassle will it be to convert?

A605-P201 is on sale at B+H for $1149.00 plus a $60 conditional mail in rebate. (havent seen the forms)
I was looking at the U400-S1301 for $909. However if I can get the rebate, that brings the A605-P201 in reach for me as well.
A605 is thinner with higher battery life. I keep waiting on the Sony battery drain issue as well because if one travels, one really wants good battery life. Sony will include 2 batteries with the machine with the promotions, but that means extra weight when carrying which is not acceptible. -

It looks like there are XP drivers for the A605. Is there a version with Vista Business + XP downgrade?

It appears that the R600 has been "released" in the U.S.
I'd like to lay hands on both laptops before making a decision, but so far have found no brick/mortar retailer that stocks either of these. -

The following A600 models have XP Professional with Vista Business license as the default O/S-
A600-S2201 - standard Aluminum Silver
A600-ST2231 - Soft Pink
A600-ST2232 - Cosmic Black
All three have identical specs and are priced at $1,399.00 on the Toshiba website. If you following this link, it should have them for $1,245.11 each- http://store.toshiba.com/public/public/search/dsp_quick_search_results.cfm?category_code_id=686
