Hello all, so back in Oct 2010 I bought one of the first series of A665-3DV. I started having problems with it and had it worked on for about 3 months before I could get to really use it. Not needing it really until now, as I am getting into my programming class and would like to take it with me, I seems to be having battery issues and heat as well.
Little bit about the heat issue, well back when it was getting fixed, I had on-site technicians come to the house cause I opted for the that warranty. Well, coming from a they did not really seem know what they doing. After the third time they came out after it was shipped to a different tech place in CA, they replaced the CPU ( because the first guy that came out forgot to plug the fan back in and it was overheating ) so they replaced it just to be sure. Well, when the guy was installed the CPU, I guess Toshiba for the tech guys forgot to order the correct thermal pads, so I grabbed some of the MX-2 thermal paste I had laying around and let him put some of that in. I do not know if all of this has caused it, but I have read that on idle CPU temps should be around 35-45c, mine runs about 55c on idle with Eco mode on.
Whew, now the battery part. While in Eco mode and a full charge it says I only have about 1hr 30mins left of battery life and this is with the 12-cell battery. Looking at the Toshiba PC Health monitor its health looks to be half on the bar between fair and good. Do these batteries deteriorate quickly?
Sorry for the long winded post, just wanted to get everything I knew upfront.

Are you using the laptop with 3D enabled while on battery? I would think the 3D hardware will zap the battery life when not plugged in.

Nope, just Eco mode and surfing the internet.

Well, I know my Qosmio has a 12-cell battery (probably the same one as yours), but I rarely use it; it only lasts for about 2 hours on eco-mode when surfing and writing word docs[Qosmio = quad-core CPU + dedicated GPU]. I'm thinking it's just the hardware that is hard on the battery life; considering your laptop hardware is very similar to my Qosmio, also has a quad-core CPU and a dedicated GPU.

Also make sure you update to the latest BIOS. There was a recent change to address a battery issue:
ACPI Flash BIOS version 2.30 for Satellite A660/A665 (PSAW0U/PSAW3U)
