    Hi,

My girlfriend has a Toshiba Satellite A70 laptop, which she loves, apart from some of its habits....the current one is that when an iPod is connected the A70 sometimes displays a message similar to "this device would be faster if it was connected to a high power USP port". The connection to the iPod is then very slow. The machine seems to slip in/out of being in USB1 and USB 2 mode.

Question 1 - what might be causing this?

Last week my external USB hard drive [a 200Gb Maxtor One Touch II] had its data corrupted whilst is was being used with the A70 [I was connecting it and disconnecting it to transfer files to and from my iPod, the A70 doesn't like both connected at the same time]. The drive now has files that can't be opened. Running Partition Magic gives a message like "the FAT table doesn't match the data on the drive".

Yesterday my girlfriends iPod died in use, but she regularly connects it to her A70 for charging and updating files. The iPod is frozen and isn't recognised by the computer.

Question 2 - does the data corruption and the dead iPod have anything to do with the A70, and does it have anything to do with the USB 2.0 "dropping down?

    Thanks in advance, Richard.

You might want to try updating the drivers for the notebook and can be done so via the control pannel and in "System Properties". In reguards to the iPod - you may want to charge it (or connect it to a power source) then hold the Play/Pause and the Menu button at the same time until it resets.
