I want to thank all of you who were so helpful in giving me suggestions to solve the problem with my laptop. Well, I've got it working and I thought I would share the solution with the Laptop community so maybe someone in the future will be helped.

It was the power adapter! The adapter I was using was listed as 19.5VDC and 5.3A. The original Toshiba unit (which I don't have) was rated at 20VDC and 6A (120W). On a whim, I tested the output of the adapter and found it was only putting out about 18V (actually 17.8). I didn't have a 120W adapter, so I tied two adapters in parallel with a total wattage of 145W @ 20V. The unit started, I loaded Windows on it and it has been running for about 20 hours as of this writing and seems to be doing just fine.

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions, and I hope this note helps someone else.
