The new Toshibas look pretty good. But I still think the HP Pavilion models are better built.

Well that's depending on your need really, if you just want a basic notebook then your everyday core duo is more than enough to handle the load. Infact, bestbuy and staples have a couple of pretty loaded acer for around 599 recently with no rebates involved. You can update memory on your own for fairly cheap as well. The Dell 6400 model have been around 699 for ages and the specs are pretty good as well. If you want quality, then i would take a look at the T60 now with shareholder discount, you can get it under 1k with pretty good specs.

I also think that HP offers better built quality than Toshiba in mainstream laptops. Im really concern about the quality of toshiba, even with this new line, maybe is better built that the A135 series but you never know.

The laptop is only for basic use, I dont think this never will be use for enconding or ripping DVDs or hardcore games, even, I think never will be used to game. Built quality is the main concern here, but also features for the price. I will avoid Acer at all cost, I really dont like his looks and buid quality, and all the cheap plastic all around. Upgrade the RAM is the way to go since I cant get a CTO. I was looking at the T60 and almost buy it but because of the delivery times was not possible.

What should I buy, the dv6000 or the toshiba?

What is the best pre-configured model on the dv6000t line that matchs my budget?

maybe the Sony VAIO FE855EH offers better built quality?

I would go with the HP as well, the design and build quality seem much more solid, no IBM of course, but very solid. If you don't need it now, wait around a bit, since you miss last week where the 200 off 999 purchase coupon was posted here, which would give you a tremendous saving on your customerized DV6000T, I saw some one customerized a core2duo for 800 before tax with this coupon.

If you need it now and are a student, then you could try APP on HP website or check around your local Circuit City, Best Buy, Office Depot, or Compusa, they usually have the lower end HP dv6000 model on sale for around 500-600 bux, with or without rebates.

Actually certain T60 model won't take that long to ship pending the customerization of your model of course.

I wouldnt get a DV6000. I had one, but returned it because of the defect with the LCD dim switch. It will turn on when the laptop is closed because the dim switch thinks the laptop lid is open.

I have an A205 on order. When I get it I will let you know how I like it.

Thanks MaxxxRacer, the A205 seems to be a good bang for the buck rigth now, but i dont know if the dv6000 vs the toshiba which one will be better talking in terms of quality.

I will let you know in a few days what I think of the A205.

In general the DV6000 seems well built. If it would not have been for that defect, the lack of restore CD's (or the ability to burn the restore image onto DVD's), the stupidly large wifi switch that gets hit all of the time and lastly the POS wifi card (we got the AMD based DV6000) we probably would have kept it.

I just bought a Toshiba A205-S4587 at Circuit City yesterday. Only difference is the hard drive space on the S4587 is 120GB whereas the S4577 is 160GB. I read every single spec & that's the only difference I saw. Its on sale $850 including printer & internet security after rebates. I had to pay $1250 up front, but will get a rebate check in about a month or 2. On sale til 4/28. Just thought I'd let you know :)

I would stay away from HP at all costs. I returned six (that's right, six) HP notebooks in three weeks because of manufacturing defects. The first one fried after 11 days of use. All the others had major problems, either LCD issues or hard drive issues or overheating and noise issues.

I own the Toshiba model and overall it's very good. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and things run smoothly. The screen is very bright so I had to dim it a bit, but other than that, it's a decent notebook. The keyboard is way better than HP.
