My friend recently got a Tecra M2 from their dad's work. But when they got it, none of the USB ports recognized anything. Are there any drivers they should download? Thanks for the help.

Look up the chipset driver and reinstall.

Are the USB hubs and controllers listed in Device Manager? Does Device Manger give an error against a device when you plug it in to a USB port?

See this thread about a similar problem.

Thanks for the replies. Well the device manager shows all of the USB ports fine, and there aren't any errors when something is plugged in, it just doesn't recognize it.

OK. So no obvious problems or errors.

This is the chipset software (I'm assuming you have Windows XP). You can get all the drivers and software from Toshiba (that is the UK site).

What devices have you tried to connect? I'm wondering that, if this came out of a company, then someone might have set it so it couldn't read / write external storage. However, a mouse should work. Did you read the user guide?

They practically tried to connect everything; cameras, hard drives, you name it. No mouses yet, and no user guide either. I'll send her this thread link to download the software.

Link to download the User Guide. However, there's nothing about the BIOS.

Could you try a Linux Live CD (eg Ubuntu) and see if USB devices work with it (eg plug a mouse in before you load the CD). If USB devices work with Linux then we know the problem is with XP. If they don't work then the problem is hardware.

If the problem is XP then download and install SP3 (assuming the chipst drives have already been reinstalled).

    John

PS: A work-around for a hardware problem is a USB card to go into the PC card slot.
