My dad brought this laptop back from work three-four years ago and it was my laptop for the past few years. I'm now using a dv5t which is great but I want some of the data from the Toshiba. It's a Portege 4010 it looks like, from reading the bottom. It's ancient.
Windows starts SLOWWWWWW and painful. If it does make it past the login screen it usually just shows the desktop background I have for a few minutes and then crashes, restarting immediately. I'd say the time of the process from pressing the power button to it restarting takes 10-15 minutes. Something is seriously messed up, and sometimes it loads a banner which tells me the copy of Windows is illegitimate - which is false. It's XP.
A month ago I used to be able to get it to the desktop. Double clicking on a folder would make it load for about three minutes before actually opening the folder and showing me its contents - if it would get that far.
I've tried a HDD-restoration program which I would make run by booting from a CD, and that would ALWAYS crash at the same point in the operation, probably at about 14% complete. The amount of bytes scanned it would reach would be the same every time before it would crash.
How can I get the data from my laptop? Or, better yet, how can I make it start?

Try tapping F8 on bootup and going into Safe Mode (just to get your data off). If that does not work, tap F8 on bootup and select "disable automatic restart on system failure." When it crashes, post back here with the error code (will look something like 0x00000000)
The message about Windows being non-genuine means it's pirated software - which may or may not be true, that message does come up on legitimate Windows from time to time, but usually, it's an indication that your Windows is illegally licensed. -
I have an old Toshiba T1850 and my original hard drive Crashed. I ordered and installed another one and when I powered up I got this message.
This BASIC was aborted, becasue this machine has no ROM BASIC Use Toshiba's BASIC ".
I tried booting up with DOS 6.22 had no luck.

Also it's definitely not pirated. I'm fairly certain it just started saying that because it's gone down the pooper.

Primary code: CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATED
Params: You've got a process being terminated required to start Windows (0x3)
I will assume you were unable to get into safe mode?
First thing I want you to do is run a Memtest. Just download the .iso, unzip it, and burn it to a CD with a program like IMGburn.
If you have a Windows XP CD available, you can also try booting from the CD, and going into the recovery console by pressing "R" when the first blue screen (not the bad kind) comes up. In there, type "chkdsk /r C:" with no quotes after selecting your Windows installation and logging in as administrator (password will be blank unless you have changed it).

I was actually able to get it into safe mode, and I was able to get 500kb worth of documents from it onto a thumb drive before the screen turned to black. I left it on safe mode all night trying to do a system restore but it didn't move past the screen where I clicked "next" for the restore to take place. Today I woke up and saw this still sitting there, so I clicked cancel and tried to get my files off.
I believe memtest is the program I mentioned using in the past where it would freeze during use.
I'll try the chkdsk thing after my evening classes but I believe I've done that in the past too.
Thanks for helping!
