I bought a new Toshiba A205-5804 and completed an XP downgrade yesterday. I have all of the drivers installed and everything is running great. The only issue left is to get the function keys working as it would be nice to dim the screen, etc. Has anyone been able to get that feature to work after installing XP from Vista? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I have not found a solution to get the FN keys working to adjust the screen... i've got the sleep button working, but that's about it... the multimedia buttons all work, and the power, and FN f1 and f2. but that's it... i tried for a few days to no avail, i now just use the Toshiba Power Saver appilcation, which lets me adjust screen, cpu speed, and all other power options, etc, and have been fairly happy with that approach... wasn't exactly what i was after, but does let me adjust everything with one click, which is better than nothing.

Thanks for the response. Do you know where I can download the program from? I tried searching on google but didn't find anything. Thanks again.

I found the file and installed it but I don't see how to start the utility. If I go to my start menu -> Toshiba -> Utilities, I only see the help file for the Power Saver but nothing else. Any idea?

It's really a non-issue now. I installed the current Toshiba Module, the computer rebooted, and it said no operating system detected. I then used the same XPsp2 disk that I installed the OS with and it can't find the hard drive. I don't think XP is worth this much trouble so I think I'll put Vista back on and order another 1GB of RAM.

sorry to hear you're having problems.... the power utilty i installed i got from the European Driver page from Toshiba,
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe....earch&macId=&country=all&action=search&page=1

There's all the XP drivers and utilities. As for the actual power saver program, it appears under the control panel, and you can set it there to show an icon in the taskbar.... then it's just a matter of clicking the little icon and away you go.

the FN key program is called thotkey.exe or tfnkey.exe. You can try tossing in your origional restore disk and loading the hotkey utility. It may install

I wasn't able to restore the computer with either the XP disk or the original Toshiba disks as it wouldn't locate the hard drive. The thing was as good as a paperweight at that point. I returned the laptop to Best Buy and purchased a new HP from Costco which I am MUCH happier with. Buying a computer and trying to install XP just doesn't seem worth the trouble to me. The new HP (which is much faster than the Toshiba) runs Vista premium just fine. I appreciate the responses though.
