I have a gift card to Office Depot - in which I could pick up this model for about $625 + tax.
Toshiba Satellite A665 S6067 16 Laptop Computer With Intel Core i7 720QM Processor With 8 Way Multi task Processing by Office Depot
We get gift cards (Office Depot rewards) about 3 times a year, and I will be getting one in a couple of weeks.
I've never owned a Toshiba before, but years ago I heard they offered quality laptops.
Does this model inherit solid build quality? Anything I should know about this model, etc.?
I won't be doing a lot of gaming, if so, likely older games I have (Tropico, Red Alert, etc.) and maybe newer ones like MOH, MW2 etc. I see the Alienware M11x (with 335m vs the Toshiba's 330m) can play MW2 quite nicely.
I do a LOT of internet research, YouTube, and watching my fantasy football teams online (NFL stream).
Thanks in advance -

I took a look at that model at Best Buy (or maybe it was the A660?) because my Toshiba is currently at the repair shop and I'll probably buy a new laptop if it can't be fixed at a reasonable price.
I liked the build quality. I think it's all plastic, but seemed very solid to me. I also liked the finish. My Toshiba's silver paint has peeled off like an onion. I thought that wouldn't happen to the A665.
Toshiba has been one of the most reliable notebook brands according to Consumer Reports for some time now. I don't know if you have other alternatives, but at that price this model seems like a steal to me. I bet you can also play newer games like SC2 or Civ 5.
If you buy it, let us know how you like it. I am considering this laptop too. -
So, you also own the A665?
I am considering a few laptops, but this is the only one I can get with the gift card - if not, I will use the gift card on a new chair, maybe a new desk, and save whatever is left.
The A665 by far has the most power of any I am considering, but like you, if it's being repaired or what-not, and that power isn't usable, it isn't the best value. -
Sorry again! -
That's interesting, Andazas. I have the same P105-S9312; I bought it 4 years ago. I loved that laptop, but unfortunately something went wrong and the screen began to wash out and go all white, and now the screen just stays black. I replaced the inverter and it worked for 20 min and then same problem. I can plug it into an external monitor and it works fine, though. I'm thinking its a video card issue. Other than that, the hinges began to crack on the back of the monitor after 3 years and a ram slot went bad.
I was debating between the A665 and the VAIO F series. I purchased a VAIO F series 122 yesterday, and the screen is HORRIBLE compared to my old Toshiba. The single bulb LCD's they use don't compare to a good LED screen, especially at a higher resolutions. I don't even know why they bother putting a blu ray player in those units. It is getting sent back immediately.
I just ordered the A665-S6067 from Office Depot. Apparently it is the same model as the A665-S6065, but includes a back lit keyboard. The S6065 has great reviews everywhere I looked, and is even currently sold out at several places. I think the fact that it uses a lower native resolution (1366x768) screen than other laptops in this hardware range will provide slightly better performance from the 330M graphics card as well.
Fortunately, right now the S6067 is $900 at Office Depot, which is even cheaper than the S6065 at most places. I wouldn't even hesitate at that price.
I will post back when I get the laptop. -
driver, how funny: I was also considering the Vaio F series and the A665. I guess we have similar tastes when it comes to laptops. I saw a Vaio F in a store and was surprised by the screen - the colors seemed washed out. I didn't think too much of it because I wasn't impressed by several screens, so I thought maybe it had to do with the poor lightning conditions of the store. It's good to know your opinion and how it compares to the screen of our old Toshiba. (By the way, I still don't know if my P105 can be repaired. I took it to a repair store but they are taking way too long. It's very frustrating.)
Please let me know what you think of your A665. I am very interested in your opinion. It's true that the low resolution must be good for gaming, but I am also going to use that laptop to work and I am wondering if I am going to lose too much real estate compared to my old P105.
PS: It seems that the A665-S6067 is sold out at Office Depot. -
Yeah, I found out today now that both the Office Depots in Anchorage had sold out of them. Apparently, Office Depot seems to be the only store that carries the S6067. The very last one they had at that store was apparently stolen yesterday, so it wasn't reflected in their inventory. I spoke with the store manager though, and he agreed to sell me their display model at an additional 10% off. I should be receiving it either tomorrow or Thursday, so I'll definitely let you know. I'll take a few good pics of the screen as well to give you some perspective on the resolution.

I hope you enjoy your new laptop. -
Got the laptop today. I thought they delivered the wrong item because the box was so light. Turns out this laptop is rather light.
Andanzas, here is an idea of the size difference between this and our 105's:
Another nice thing about this over the 105's:
Probably not the best example of the resolution. Much wider aspect ratio, which is becoming more common these days.
The back lighting is far superior to the VAIO's in my opinion. (There isn't anywhere near the glare from underneath the keys like there was on the VAIO.)
Seems sturdy. The keyboard is really light press, the mouse pad is decent, and the mouse buttons aren't loud. One feature I like: There is a button at the bottom of the keyboard to turn the mouse pad on/off, which I find nice during typing documents, as it eliminates accidentally moving the mouse or unintentionally clicking on something.
The screen has a much better viewing angle and is similar to the 105. Its clear, and far less grainy than the VAIO. It has a brightness adjustment as well, although I found the most favorable picture with it at 100%. My only complaint would be the black levels not quite dark enough, although probably about as good as any lap top screen can get. I find that with its slightly lower native resolution, that lower quality streaming video (youtube) looks a bit cleaner. I ran a dvd through it and the picture was great, even in stretched mode.
It comes installed with the face recognition software and Skype, although I haven't messed with it yet. The fit, finish, and general appearance is very nice. It has a black carbon fiber look. It will attract fingerprints, though. The speakers on this sound great, and go rather loud. The fan is not nearly as loud as the 105 or the VAIO. This fan is actually really quiet, although I haven't put much stress on it yet. Only thing I'm not used to are using buttons to control everything (ie:volume, wireless switch)
I still need to make a backup dvd, and haven't had much time to really go through it yet or try any games or applications.
I think Toshiba takes a more simplistic approach, and rather than trying to be as cutting edge as some of the other brands, they tend to stick with the tried-and-true basics, which also means the less extra stuff to worry about breaking later.
Overall I feel like this is a great buy for $900. I don't think there's currently much else out there with an i7 for that price.
Feel free to post any more questions any of you may have.Andanzas likes this. -
Thanks so much, driver! Your pics are great and your impressions very helpful.
The backlit keyboard looks gorgeous. I know it's not one of the most important features, but now I really want my next laptop to have one. I think it may come in handy in a lot of situations. Too bad the A665-S6067s seem completely sold out and even the A665-S6065s are going fast. Oh well.
I am glad you like it. Enjoy it! I'd love to hear more impressions when you have more time to play with it. And thanks again for those great pictures. -
I hated that #$%@ plug too. Cant count the times I would be in the middle of something and the laptop would just shut down, because that power plug fell out. The reason my paint probably isn't as worn out is because I was using an external keyboard on mine for quite some time. This 6067 does not have any painted plastic on it; I can say that much.
I'm kind of shocked as to why Office Depot is the only one who carries this laptop, when the same non-backlit laptop is offered almost everywhere else. I can say one thing though: Office Depot has actually been really good to me when it comes to their customer service. They seem to screw up orders somewhat frequently, but their customer service and store managers have always gone out of their way to remedy the situation. They were top notch in helping me get this laptop. I called their 1-800 number when I purchased mine online because I needed it shipped earlier than the website said it would. It didn't ship from a warehouse, either, but actually from the nearest store (500 miles away) that had it in stock. They actually had that store call me the next day and offer me all of their shipping options per my request. I also received an actual cash register receipt from that store as well, stapled to the invoice inside the shipping box.
I am sure they will sell this thing out of stock pretty quick. You might be better off trying to get it online through Office Depot's website, if you decide to pull the trigger and buy one. (They're on sale until Saturday.) If you call their customer service, they can tell you where it is shipping from. At least if there are any issues, you can take it back to your own local store, instead of having to worry about the headache of RMA shipping it somewhere. I buy a lot of things online, but I shy away from buying computers and computer parts online for this exact reason. -
Well, my P105 is back home, apparently in good health. I guess that's good news, right? I don't need to buy a new laptop. I don't have to keep researching all those wonderful options out there... I won't need to wait impatiently until the delivery finally arrives... I won't have to open that box carefully when I really feel like tearing it apart to be done as soon as possible... I won't need to turn it on for the first time and configure the OS to my liking... Aw, snap. It's actually great that I don't have to spend all that money right now, but I was so looking forward to buying a new laptop... Oh well. Hopefully, next year. XD
Enjoy your new machine, driver.I am sure it will be great.
PS: Actually, the screen on the P105 is gorgeous. I really missed it. -
Envy...Yeah I miss the 105 screen. Did they tell you what was wrong with it, what they ended up replacing?
-
They repaired the video chipset and secured the connection to the system board. It beats me why they kept my computer for almost a month. They did say it would be a complex repair and they could fail... I ended up paying $210.
Anyone own the A665-S6067 (i7-720) model?
