I am thinking of getting a new Toshiba x205 but when I get it I want to put a Hitachi Travelstar 7200 RPM hard drive in it. Has anyone put a replacement HD in this notebook and if so, how easy was it? Also, does it void the Toshiba warranty if you replace the hard drive yourself?

    Thanks!

Got it on order right now, I'll let you know at the end of this week. If you have to send it in for warranty, just throw the old drive back in...

OK Thanks for the response. You think Toshiba would notice the hard drive wasn't used at all or was re-installed recently if it were returned for under warranty service?

I can't believe more people aren't responding, I figure the number of folks replacing these hard drives would be high, seeing as how they are gaming notebooks but come with a 5600 RPM drive...

I replaced both hard drives on my X205-9349 and it took me about 15 minutes to replace both, it is very simple and easy. I also finished upgrading the CPU to the T7700 2.4Ghz about 15 minutes ago, now that I only recommend to someone with a lot of technical (been a service technician for 19 years) experience like myself. :p  :D

Good to hear, if you don't mind me asking what brand and speed hard drive did you install and are you happy with them?

Wow...thought you just upgraded to T7300, now up and up again to T7700 :)
I wished I had your skills to do it.

I like to upgrade the GPU too, perhaps to SLI-8700m? you think it fits?
    or 8800m when it's avail?

Planet - I had but I wanted more speed so I returned the T7300 and got the T7700, I am crazy that way sometimes. It would be possible to upgrade to the sli 8700M GT, the only problem would be finding them.
    ;)

Shawnh28 - I have the Western Digital scorpio drives and I like them, I was looking at the 7200 rpm hitachi's but I did not want the extra heat they would generate.

So you still have 5400 RPM drives, just opted for another brand? Are the WD Scorpio drives more fail proof?

I have the Hitachi installed now... windows experience index went from 5.0 to 5.5. Everything opens faster, feels more responsive. When I first installed it, I used Acronis True Image 10 to mirror the old drive and save it to the 2nd drive. When I restored it to the Hitachi, it showed as only a 160gb drive in Windows. At first I thought it was a bios issue, but when I went into admin tools I found the other 40gb was sitting there unused, unformatted, so I recovered it there and now everything is good. If anyone else does this, remember, the primary hd drive is the one under the smaller plastic cover held on by one screw. Is it worth the $204 I paid for it? YES! If there's a benchmark someone would like to see, let me know and I'll download it and run it...

3dmark06 was the same as before....4367 @ default settings 1280x1024

    Lost Planet Demo Test....before 26-snow 35-cave
    now 27-snow 36-cave

Load times decreased on everything, getting closer to desktop speed....

Oops, I had custom settings in there, I forgot....but I did have things turned up a bit(1280x800 etc...)and not sure of the other settings....

Try this, go in and put the video/audio settings to default(1024x576 etc..). I just did that and got this for a score:

    41.5 FPS Snow

    38.6 FPS Cave

Oh dear, I reset to default everything (1024x576 etc..)....and I am getting this:

    19fps Snow.
    10fps Cave.

What is going on with my x205-S9359 ?!!

    OV10stang,

That's a huge difference for the same x205...

Did you upgrade your CPU, etc...?

What other things should I set/install/optimize?

I am already using the latest driver 163.69.

hmm I am at a lost...

I have 4gb of ram, but nothing else that would make that kind of improvement in frame rates... Did you uninstall the old driver before installing the new one? I also found that I have to install the new driver twice....not sure why, but it will not work correctly unless I install it twice(right on top of itself again)...it sucks and takes longer, but makes everything work better.

I put my swap file on the 2nd drive, disabled indexing on all drives, disabled superfetch, keeping the discs defragged, as well as disabling any other bloatware that doesn't need to be running. I think I had similar lousy performance as you in this demo when I first got my laptop.

Hard drives don't affect frame rates, they don't affect games aside from possibly shaving some load times off.

You can't. GPUs have to be custom made for each type of notebook.
