Are the Aussies getting better laptops than EU/US?

I am trying to find out more info about the Toshiba M40/K00 that has a 2Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, Card Reader, nVidia Go 6600 with 128MB dedicated VRAM, 15.4" screen and 80GB drive (i.e the upgraded M40/700.

In searching the web and this *great* forum, I notice that no one else seems to have them yet which makes me wonder if us Aussies are getting something *before* the rest of the world for a change.

Does anyone else have one of the beauties and what do they think? Its only downfall at the moment is the 6 cell battery which lasts about 3 hours (alledgedly).

How good do you think the graphics card will be in this setup? That was my core requirement and I wanted the ATI Mobility x700, but there was nothing that met the rest of my requirements within a decent price range.

    Cheers,
    Whytey

Ahhhh...bugger it! I bought one, it is sweet.

I might even review it, if I can stop drooling all over it :p

hehe even though you have already bought one...

The reason you haven't seen any in the US is because they are selling as the M45 over there. The specs aren't exactly the same, but I'm pretty sure that it's the M40 is Aus and the M45 in the US.

    See here.

djwhyte, I'm keen on this lappy too. Can you post what the battery times are like? How portable is it? Is it more of a desktop replacement?

I'm still deciding whether it is worth me spending this much on a laptop (they are rip off prices here in NZ), or whether I should look at something with less gaming capabilities and more portability.

I will be going back to study later on this year and need to switch from a desktop (i'll be going to London). I already have quite demanding gaming software (Doom3, Hlaf-Life2, Call of Duty) and wouldnt mind a few upcoming distractions (COD2, HL2 Afterlife/Lost Coast, Quake 4 etc), but these arent essential study tools ;)
So maybe a Portege would be a smarter buy.

Anywho, your thoughts/answers to the above questions would be helpful i think.

    Hi maxVP,

I haven't really given the battery a full stretch! I use it on battery now and again, but most of the time I am on power. That said, it estimates it could give me 2:15 - 2:45 on battery, and that is using wifi and bluetotth switched on (for my BT mouse). The screen etc are all on the default settings.

I have to admit, I haven't stopped drooling. I have no real issues with this machine at all, though I haven't tried the DVD burner yet. The only thing I would say is that the slider over the SD reader seems a little flimsy, but I have hardly moved it yet.

As for the portability. Other than going from one room to another, I haven't done any moving around yet. I do plan to go to work with it this week and possibly use it on the train, so I may let you know afterwards. Its not a *heavy* laptop, but it is not light either, but for the specs it is just right. I think the widescreen may be an issue for my fellow commuters on the train however :p

As for the games, I still haven't stretched those legs either, however, I can let you know that the video card was the my priority when buying and I think that this notebook provides the best card, when tied in with the fact its a toshiba (over say the X700 in the Acer) and its well priced and 15.4". For a better card, you would have to go for a bigger screen and/or *dodgier* make.

I would prefer a docking port if I could have had one so that I could jut plug it in next to my TV easily for playing back my programs (I record tham on a linux server). Then I would drool really bad :p

Well, I hope that helps. Any further questions, let me know. Sorry it took so long to reply, however, the only think this laptop doesn't give me is more hours in the day :|
