anyone install a atheros mini pci with new chipset in their toshiba instead of the usual intel card? would love to hear from you if you did?

my main concern is that if i do an upgrade and change out my card...will the wirless on/off switch on the outside (right side of the case) on a100 still function properly?

My A15-S157 came with an internal Orinoco card, and I replaced it with an Intel 2915. The switch still works, and it uses the internal antenna just fine (with better signal strength than the Orinoco, at that). Granted it's not an A100, but I imagine that they're similar in this regard.

But I did the upgrade because I had the last piece of 802.11b equipment in the house and it was slowing the rest of the network down. If the card you have does 802.11g, you may want to wait until something capable of 802.11n is available, unless you have your own reasons for switching to the Intel.

The thing is that the atheros supports super g up to 108 instead of 54 which the intel i have now does. wireless n will require me to get a n-router, and since i have a super g router, i wanted to upgrade to a super g card.....just dont wanna lose the functionality of the switch outside....

Hi, did you ever find an answer? I am curious about this as well. I dont think it will make a difference, I think it is a power switch that's part of the mobo wiring, nothing to do with the card. Of course, I am assuming...

I must admit I actually never thought that it might not work.... I've been planning on switching my m115-s3094 to an Atheros card.

By the way your note is pci or pci-e? where are you going to buy the atheros?

    cheers

nah i never found an answer.....still looking....i really wanna do an upgrade.....i was thinking of buying one on ebay ( actual atheros) but i was also willing to go for a gigabyte one (has atherso chipset).

mine is pci-e. under the keyboard. (used to have a p10 with pci which was atheros, if u have that i know give you directions to upgrading the .sys file which which transform the 54mbps to 108 mbps)

ANYONE know the answer by the way?

Hey, wanted to get back to you on this.. check this thread
    http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/index.php/t13522.html

It's a bunch of people installing OSX on PC laptops, and they all swap their Intel cards because they dont work in OSX... Anyway, a few posts down, one guy said he installed the Atheros instead of Intel and his switch didnt work in Windows but with some playing around he got it working in OSX. THEN someone posted that his worked in OSX but not in Windows. One was using an Acer and the other an HP.
So, since it worked for one and not the other (in Windows, which is what I assume you are doing) I think it's kind of a gamble, but if you do end up buying the Atheros, let me know if you get it working.
    cheers!

yea i looked into that site...mostly about ibm and hp....neither ones like toshibas....read that ibm cards do not work in other laptops very well, wouldnt try that, and also most cards on ebay list that they do not work with hp but do work with all other major brands. so nothing there, either.

however i did get somethin, "GigaByte GN-WI01GT MINI PCI-Express WLAN CARD - 108 Mbps - not tested, but prolly not working because it is based on the 3945 a/b/g, as mentioned "....if this is true then, the gigabyte card should have no problems, and is selling for about 40 on ebay. i'll let u know when i chek it out! let me know if u find anything else
