Hi guys
I did a format on a friend's PC to install Ubuntu on it and after a couple of restarts, it seems that the BIOS has been damaged. It talks of some damage to Block 1. I have read a fair bit on the internet but there is nothing concrete on the internet.
I am really hoping there is a way to easily flash the BIOS so that it can be restored. Am I thinking right or is it way too positive?
Also it would be great if someone can let me know what the cause of this error could possibly be?

Can you tell us exactly what the error says? A format of a hard drive and installation of an OS should not have affected the BIOS. You could have a problem with sector 1 on the hard drive...

It says the following;

Seems like your BIOs is shot. I doubt the notebook has an easily removed BIOs chip so might be the serviceman route...
The only way to flash would be to boot first and if you can't do that there is not much you can do. If the BIOs chip is in a socket you can try hot flashing.
edit: See if you can get a maintenance disk from Toshiba. The BIOs is not totally shot so it is probably trying to recover from the optical drive. You can try downloading a working BIOs then put it on a disk or a USB drive and see if it automatically attemps to recover. -
This sounds like it might be worth a try, http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=72608
