So does the batyery led on the computer lite up when it is charging? Does it run on the battery?

Does it make a difference if you insert or remove the battery while powered on?

Try holding the power button for ten seconds after the computer is powered on with the battery, also try holding the power button for ten seconds while powered off with the battery and with ac power connected.

Also check all the battery contact springs, including the two that may be on the side.

Does your friend also have a A300? If so, then you can try swapping the hard drives. This will let you know if it is a hardware or software problem. It is easy to do.

Not sure what you mean you changed windows. So this may not apply. You may try installing Windows to a different partition on the hard drive. This means you may need to make a small partition to do this. There are programs that will do this without loosing your data, which I assume is important. Be careful though. Make sure that when you install windows you do it when the computer is fully off, i.e. what is called a cold boot. This is to prevent any viruses from jumping over to the new install.

So that is two ways we can test the hardware versus software question. Ubuntu might work as a test as well, but I am not sure it works with the battery meter on this model. It probably does, so it is worth a try. It is easy to do a dual boot with it, so you won't lose your data or windows.

No need to try Windows again.

Try the power cycle but hold for a full 30 seconds as per below.

    Power Cycle

Turn off the laptop, unplug any accessories, unplug the power adaptor, and remove the battery if the battery is user-replaceable. Then hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Afterward, reattach the battery and reconnect the laptop.

    Clean Contacts

If the battery is user-replaceable, ensure that the metal contacts of the battery and the laptop are clean.

Remove the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery

Remove the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and allow Windows to scan your computer for hardware and reinstall the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should then indicate that the battery is charging.

    1. In Windows 8, hold the Windows key and press the 'x' key to open a menu in the lower-left, then select Device Manager. In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, click Start and typedevice in the search field, then select Device Manager.
    2. Expand the Batteries category.
    3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall . WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.
    4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes. Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
