My Satellite 205 has no power. One guy said it was the jack, andother guy said it was the battery.

But if I hold my power supply up to my ear, I can hear it beeping about as fast as a heartbeat. Is that why it wont start up, or unrelated?

Unless somebody tells me otherwise, I'm going to replace it with this generic one.

if the battery was dead, your notebook would at least be running when using the power supply.

Replace the power supply and see if that makes a difference; also, once you get it up and running again, let it run on battery alone on a fully-charged battery and see how long it takes for the battery to exhaust itself. If it discharges in a short time, replace the battery as well, as a dead or dying battery could cause the system to think that it needs to run more slowly, even if it's plugged into the power supply. Finally, if you predominantly use the system plugged in, remove the battery and keep it stored only for those times when you go unplugged.

    I'm with Schoko & Shyster1,

the humming sound is probably the CT in the PSU, if a lose winding is there or even lose insulation can cause such a sound due to the vibration at the mains supply frequency. This can indicate that the PSU most probably suffered a surge thereby the sound from the affected components (CT).

    Any ways good luck :)
