I first fell in love with Toshiba laptops about five years ago for one reason and one reason only: it was the only laptop out there that has a hardware volume dial!

Most of the laptops have these stupid keys that you have press to adjust volume, and it is always software controled Windows volume, which means two things:

    1. you can't adjust the volume until Windows boots up!
    2. you can't adjust the volume with the laptop clamshell closed!

Every Toshiba laptop I have used for the past five years, from Tecra to Portegee, always have had this old fashined hardware volume dial - until NOW!

To my horror, I noticed starting with the Portege M700, although it still has a volume dial, but it is now a software Windows volume dial! And to my even greater horror, the latest Tecra no longer has a volume dial at all!

This is a show stopper for me. What am I going to do now? Is it time for me to quit using laptop altogether? I am deeply saddend and depressed. Help!

Unfortunately, this is another stupid trend laptop manufacturers have adopted. My old Satellite 1135 even has a potentiometer volume control. There are alot of things I don't like about the current generation of laptops, Toshiba included. Unfortunately, you have to accept them in order to upgrade your hardware.

I'm thinking of getting a USB DAC anyway for my audio needs. Currently lusting after the Audinst HUD-MX1...

I'm surprised you still remembered your user name and password for 3years especially considering this is your first post :D. - Welcome to the NotebookReview Forum? ;)

Toshiba got rid of the hardware based volume control dial back in 2008 and replaced it with either software based dials (Mid Value Notebooks) or touch sensitive controls (Premium Notebooks).

Like you, I too am saddened (but not depressed) that Toshiba got rid of this unique feature. Hopefully they'll bring it back however things don't look promising since the 'Touch' is the 'shiz' at the moment.

    Hi,
I'm sorry to say that the hardware volume button is not/was unique to Toshiba. IBM/Lenovo has had a hardware volume button for many years.
