I have an old Satellite 1905 s301 that comes with 256MB of RAM (under the keyboard) and has an added 256 in the slot in the back.
Can I take both chips out and replace them with a single 1Gig ram chip under the keyboard?
It can only take 1Gig of RAM and I am trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

Well if you do that, then you need to take both 256MB sticks out so I would say just get 2x512 sticks. I believe computers don't like to have their ram maxed out with one stick (especially older ones), most likely because the memory controller doesn't support the higher density of the single stick. So, I recommend that you should buy 2*512 sticks for greater compatibility and sometimes buying 2 small sticks is a little bit cheaper than buying 1 large capacity stick.

That notebook takes old PC2700 DDR RAM. Crucial recommends up to 512MB modules for this notebook. Crucial does have a 1GB DDR module, but it costs more than 2 x 512MB.

what they said!!!!!!!
it works better if it does match, IMO. Plus, I bet it won't accept 1 stick of 1G by itself...... -
but heres the thing, its PC2700 DDR ram,
it'll cost much more than 2gigs of ddr2 memory
be prepared to spend a lot if your going to keep that laptop -
I just got a gig (2 x 512MB) for less than a hundred dollars including shipping. The laptop sucks but it is far less than getting a new one.
Can I go with a single 1G RAM chip in a Satellite?
