Can I use an external monitor if my laptop monitor is black?

So I posted the other day about my laptop shaking. Well now the screen is almost completely black (I can see faint shadows and the thing connects to the internet and is successfully running). Based on the red dim that preceded the fading out of the screen I think the problem is the backlight or the inverter. Can I use an external monitor? I can't see enough on the laptop monitor to mess with the preferences - can I use the keys to set up the external monitor?

    Thanks

Hook up an external monitor to find out.

The laptop's external video connector will have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with whatever's up with the LCD's CCFL or inverter.

As in through a VGA wire and port? If so, hook it up and hold FN+F5. I believe it's F5, if not look for the key with a little rectangle on it.
