Yes, it's a Sandy Bridge [i7-2620M - Dual Core] and the RAM/Harddrive can be upgraded later. Has most of the latest features available (should also have USB 3.0, but I didn't see it listed).

I would call to see if it has the 720p screen or 900p screen [would be better for programming and database work]. The US models have been updated with the option to buy a higher resolution 900p screen; I hear Europe doesn't have this option yet.

    Good luck

I clicked on the link, but a Toshiba site with an "error" pops up. I tried searching for the Tecra on the provided site, but it just keeps saying error. Maybe it's because I'm outside of their region.

If it's a r840, it should come with USB 3.0. AS for the screen being 900p, that is an upgrade. If you don't see it, then it is probably not available (I would call though; maybe they can let you know when it is available).

Here's the U.S. model. As you will see, it does provide an option to upgrade to 900p.

The Tecra you listed does have USB 3.0. However, it does NOT have a 1600x900p screen. The screen is only 1,366 x 768.

If I were you, I would check out a computer store and ask to see a laptop with a 1,366 x 768 screen. If that is ok with you, then you should be fine.

By the way, 1,366 x 768 is very normal for a 14" laptop. The 1600x900 screen on a 14" laptop is more of a luxury.

    Good luck

But for programming, it's an essential "luxury" because it makes a really big difference.

Edit is most likely right. Get a laptop with 900p if doing programming

Still has a mediocre screen resolution.

    Also never get the i7-2620M

The i7-2620M is essentially never worth it. Get the i5-2520M. The i7 is only marginally better by an unnoticeable amount, but the cost difference is absurd.

Try to look at the Lenovo Thinkpad T420 and Dell Latitude E5420 / E6420, which have a 1600x900 option - the most important thing by far for programming.

A 1600x900 display is available with the 8460p, but you either have to get one of the preconfig models that have it, or configure your own model. And HP tries to extort money from people via the configurable models.

Also, I would advise against the HD6450M equipped R840. It is not switchable. In 14" 900P consider a Lenovo T420s, Dell E5420/E6420, HP Probook 4430s/6460P/8460P. 13" Sony SA has a 900P LCD.

Can compare these and more in the thin-and-light link in my sig. 15" MSI GE620 a great value 1080P, lightweight system to consider.

If your usage benefits from a quad, the quad is okay to select, but if the 2630QM is available, then stick with it because it's got a better price-to-performance ratio than the 2720QM.

Gaming notebook = more raw power (CPU and GPU), but at the cost of: usually heavier (less mobile) and has significantly less battery life. Most gaming laptops are 7 lbs and over.

If you want more power, you can try to get a "high performance" laptop [step below gaming laptop]. Usually has a dedicated switchable graphics GPU (Nvidia GT version, NOT GTX version; or ATI Switchable Hybrid Graphics). Usually around 5-6 lbs.

Business class is usually better quality, more durable and lightweight. Also has a good amount of battery life.
However, there are also business class "workstations" which are made for Engineers or any profession that requires a professional grade GPU. These can be heavy and have decreased battery life (similar to gaming laptops).

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, if you plan on carrying your laptop around to many places, a heavy gaming notebook can become a burden. If your not going to be moving it to many places, then it could work.

    Good luck
