I have a Toshiba Satellite A55 S1066 with a cracked screen. I would like to use my 19" wide LCD as an external, but I do not see the option of 1440 x 900 in the Windows screen resolution options.
So everything looks all s t r e t c h e d.
In the future, whats the best way to tell if an older notebook is going to be able to power a 19" wide externally?

I think if it has a widescreen already then it can use external widescreens for sure. Also what drivers are you using? Try updating them.

I think you're right. But I noticed that plenty of notebooks (at least old ones) support external monitors at a higher resolution than their built-in screen. Which makes perfect sense. While you're home, you don't need portability, and don't need battery, you want a bigger monitor. So it seems to me that plenty of later model laptops should support a 19" wide (1440 x 900). But even with all the LCDs on sale everywhere, there doesn't seem to be any place to see if your laptop supports it.

What kind of video card is inside your A55? There may be soluton if it's Nvidia or ATI based.

Not 100% sure (how do I tell for sure?) but I think it's a built-in Intel Extreme Graphics 2.
Can my Satellite run an external 19" wide LCD??
