Are you booting off a CD or putting it into the drive while logged into windows, and then trying to install after selecting install option in windows? Also Have you checked that the Media is not damaged (probably not as it actually tells you that you cannot install). Also what exact notebook do you have?

Is this a restore CD from another computer brand or is it a full XP OS CD? If it's one from another computer brand, this could explain why it won't work. Some manufacturers use modified versions of the OS that searches for specific values in your BIOS. If these values are not located, you won't be able to install. Toshiba is one of these manufacturers that adds this "security" feature to their CD's. The only want to get around that would be to buy a full/upgrade retail version of XP Pro.

Unless you have a specific need I doubt notice any difference.
