Hi, I just got a toshiba from ebay, it turns out it came with vista installed and with the old user files. So I decided to reinstall it with the supplied dvds, but I when I inserted the 1st cd and started the recovery process, It asked me for the 2nd cd, but the seller never send it it, just the 1st one, so the computer its in a dead point, whenever I turn on the laptop or restart it, I get pass the home screen that says toshiba, and then a black screen with a small dash in the upper left corner, and stays there. I alredy tried booting it with my vista cd and my xp cd, but still nothing, same thing. Any other suggentions, I alredy tried putting the 1st cd from toshiba, and It wont do nothing, the dvd drive reads it but nothings changes. Please help me out !!!!!!!.

First things first, check to make sure the the CD drive is still set to be the first device in the boot priorities. If it somehow changed itself (I'm not sure exactly why it would have) to boot the hard drive as the first device, that is why you are going to that screen.

I am not familiar with Vista, so I can't give you any suggestions there except to either contact the seller or contact Toshiba for new recovery discs.

I just recently did a clean install of Vista on mine. I used a Windows upgrade anytime CD instead of the Recovery CD's. Use the Registration numbers that came with the laptop to keep things legal (They should be on the bottom of the case). I personally prefer this method, as it allows me to get a clean install of the OS without any of the bloatware that comes on the Toshiba disks. Hope this helps.
