Thinking about possibly buying the P100 and am wondering if anyone has put together a clean install guide so I get start fresh, get rid of bloatware and still have all my devices working smoothly. Would love to hear from any users how you have done this and thanks.

I just got my P100 a couple of days ago. I love this thing, but like every new notebook its loaded with bloatware. I've done a complete reinstall on my HP laptop, but I'm kinda hesitant to do it on my new Tosh. Bloatware aside everything is working perfectly. I happen to be a firm believer of the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!"

I've disabled a few apps from starting, but boot time is still taking about 90 secs. With a complete reinstall I know this can be cut down to just under 60 secs. I'd also like to hear from people who have done a reinstall on their P100/P105 laptops. Or even better, how to remove all the bloatware manually. I've already spent the last couple of evenings installing my games and apps, so just the thought of having to do that again is making me exhausted.

How many partitions are on your HDD when you received it from Toshiba? Thanks.

And, did you receive a Windows CD or some recovery Cd that if used would put back on all the bloatware? Thanks again.

How do you find out if you have any partitions on your HD? I don't think mine has any.

Yes, it came with a recovery, applications and driver disc.

If you go to My Computer, you can see how many drives your disk id divided in. I don't know if your recovery disk included Windows or not but if it does, there may be options where you can just install Windwos or if not, you would have to install the whole lot of programs. If anyone knows, would love clarification on this and thanks again.

Have received word from Toshiba suppport that the Recovery CD contains an image that places Windows and all the bloatware back on the laptop. Too bad for that but if it is only formatted in one partition, I guess uninstalling the bloatware is the only way to go for me with this laptop.

Thanks for that info. I would've wasted a lot of time reinstalling my new Tosh. Oh well, like I said, it ain't broke, so I'll just have to tweak it a little. By the way, AOL can be uninstalled by going into Programs (not the start menu). Pesky AOL!! LOL

Might have asked this in another thread and sorry if I did but do you have any options in the Bios that relate to USB support sch as Disable/Enable USB Legacy Devices. Toshiba support says there is but I would love a confirmation from a user. This would help me understand if the machine is compatable with a variety of USB devices that run outside of
    Windows. Thanks.

I just bought a Toshiba P100-SD8. What i did was went on the internet, downloaded all the drivers and a few system apps from Toshiba.ca under the support section and burnt them on a DVD.

I then rebooted and installed my own version of Windows XP pro, mine came with Media Center. After it was installed, i just went through the drivers one by one installing them until everything was right under device manager.

I also changed the partitioning on my laptop and made a 25gb c drive and 90gb d drive, because i like having my OS partition seperate from my files so i can blow it away at any time.

After i got everything installed and worked out, i then ghosted the system so i can blast it back at anytime, it was actually quite easy and just took a few hours. Have had zero problems, everything works perfectly.

    Craig,

That is fantanstic to hear but I need to ask a couple of questions.

    1. Did you have to disable Native SATA drivers on the hard drive in the Bios (if that is possible) before you tried to install Windwos?

    2. Did you wipe all the original partitions and then install your copy of Windows? And, is that a retail version or an OEM version of Windows that you have?

May have more questions but yhou have given me some hope that it can be done. Love to hear from you and others.

    huntnyc,

1- no i didn't and no im pretty sure it isn't possible.. the bios is pretty barebones, not many options there.

2- the Toshiba comes with a huge C drive and a couple hundred mb D drive. i wiped them both out and then made the partitions the way i wanted. as for the copy of Windows, im embarrased to say that it is a 'borrowed' copy from a friend.

one other thing about the recovery disks.. after i installed my own OS and got everything working how i liked, i wanted to have a look at Media Center that came with the machine.. so i booted the machine with the recovery disk to install Media Center. If you've partitioned your machine differently that from the factory, the recovery disks give you the option of restoring all factory partitions or keeping the partitions the way you have them. I chose to keep the partition the way i had them and all it did was reinstall on my C drive and didn't change, resize or touch any of my partitions.

if you have any other questions i can help you with, don't hesitate to ask, i love this laptop.

    Craig,

Thanks for that. Just got home. One more thing a little off topic but I have been asking others because I often back up my HDD outside of Windows to USB 2.0 enclosure. Do you see any option in the Bios that allows you to Disable/Enable Legacy USB Devices? Might be under Advanced Configuration category or something like that. Thanks and your previous post was very helpful.

    Gary,

    Craig,

Thanks again. That might be close to Disable/Enable USB Legacy Devices but it might cost me $300 rstocking fee from Amazon.com to find out the hard way whether my USB HDD 2.5 enclosure will work with my Bootit NG program at USB 2.0 speeds making images ofthe system outside of Windows. Would love to take a chance but if anyone else has any close experience to what I am talking about with this situation and the Satellite P100 or P105 I would appreciate the input. Thanks again Craig.

Can anyone tell me what the smalled second partition on the HDD is for on the Satellite P100/P105? And, is it okay just to wipe out that partition?

Have not yet decided whether I will do a complete clean install or just work with what is there and remove what I don't want. But, if I do just remove what I don't want, I really just want to start with a C partition only.

    Thanks.

Craig, xman1, did you run into any Windows Activation problems when you installed your copy of Windows on the Satellite? If I install my own copy, I hope I will be able to activate it without any problems. Thanks.

    Gary,

remember mine was a 'borrowed' copy, unfortunately so i didn't activate it. if yours is a legitimate copy, you won't have any problems im sure.

    Craig,

To be more specific, if I do a reformat and reinstall with my legit copy of XP Pro, would I enter the serial number with that copy or would I enter the serial number, if there is one, from the bottom of the P100? Thanks again for your response.

    Gary,

    no problem.

you would definately enter the serial number that comes with the legit XP that you own. the serial number i have on the bottom of my machine is for XP media center that came with the machine.

Thanks a lot Craig. I will be using a legit copy of XP Pro and my laptop comes with XP Pro. But of course, no Toshiba XP CED I can use except the recovery CD which I don't want to use. Thanks again.

    Craig,

Waiting on my customized P100 to be delivered today. Could you tell me if you added the drivers and utilities in any particular order on your clean install? You have been a great help and I will let you and all know how things go. Thanks.
