Today (07/04/12) I purchased a Toshiba Satellite p870 laptop and while setting up I started to hear a small clicking noise. The noise itself isn't rhythmic or very loud. I started searching on the internet and found something called the 'click of death.' This is news to me; my old Toshiba never clicked and ran quietly in the back ground. This machine is just out of the box and I have 13 days to return it. Is the click something I should be worried about?
Side note: A Hard Drive Error message keeps popping up--" Vibration has been detected in the pc. The hard disk head is temporarily moved to a safe partition."
I have a small feeling that this may be the cause, but again this message is news to me.![]()

Down load this app, install it and have a look at the smart data, if anything is in red or yellow, so might have a problem.

In addition to the great advise Tinderbox mentioned above; the warning message could be from the Toshiba Harddrive Protection software.
I, like many others, have found it's default setting is too sensitive. Try turning it down to level 2 protection. However, I am assuming your moving the laptop around when this message is popping up for you.
Here's more info about the software: Toshiba HDD Protection
To open the HDD Proctector, click the system task bar arrow [up arrow in bottom right of screen], and click on the "HDD Protection" program.
Here's an image that shows the location of the arrow I'm talking about [ignore the 2nd red arrow pointing to "customize"]:
Hopefully this also solves the clicking issue [the protection software will make noise as it parks the harddrive head into a safer position].
Good luck -
Tinkerbox and alexUW thank you for the help! I downloaded the app and my system was in the green zone, in addition I also reduced the sensitivity on my HDD setting. The clicking noise is gone and I now have piece of mind!
Is the clicking sound common with todays new laptops? I purchased my previous laptop 6 years ago and never encountered HDD issues as I had with this one.
Once again, thank you for the suggestions and help! -
