I am being told by Best Buys that a "comparable technologies" warranty replacement for my Qosmio G-15 AV501 is the Satellite P105 S9337. While it is certainly an upgrade from my three year old Qosmio, it does not have all the features of the AV501. Toshiba recommends the G-35 AV660 as a replacement for the AV501, but the AV660 does not get very good reviews.

What do you know about the P105? It comes with Windows Vista which seems to be presenting major problems for users. The AV660 uses XP. The cost differential between my AV501 and the P105 us $1,000.00. Is this comparable technologies stuff legit?

Any recommendations, suggestions, or information will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi greersfolly.

Your system is 3-years old--and the P105 is much more powerful than your current Qosmio despite the price difference. I have a $4500+ notebook from eight years ago that is worthless today. A $600 notebook today will put it to shame.

I think that if you can get a brand new notebook as a replacement for a 3-year old one--it is a good deal indeed. I think Toshiba recommends the new G-35 as a replacement for G-15 owners who are looking to purchase a new system, not for Best Buy to issue as "comparable technology" replacements.

Yes, that is certainly one aspect that I had considered. Thank you.

Now I am concerned about the problems everyone is having with Vista. How widespread is this?

An operating system is a very complicated software platform. It needs to be able to interact with countless devices and drivers, etc. As it is still very young still, there are of course going to be compatibility and driver issues for a while to come. Some problems still need to be worked out and others need to be discovered still.

Personally I prefer XP right now, since the developers have had years to straighten out these same issues and it is much more widely supported at this time.

Thanks again. That is another reason why I do not want the Toshiba P105 with Vista as a replacement for my AV501. Perhaps Best Buys will let me return the P105 and pay the difference to purchase the Qosmio G-35 AV660 which uses XP, but is Vista ready. That seems like the best of both worlds.

Good luck with that proposition. It definitely would be the best of both worlds to do so.
