So I got a new Toshiba Satellite A660 and it's a great computer, but it keeps turning itself on while on sleep mode (and in a sleeve) and nearly overheating because of it. I can't have this. If I can't solve this problem, I'm going to have return it (that'll be the third computer I've returned in the past 6 months). What can I do about this?

I don't know your exact model, but you may try the "Product Support" page for your model. [click Product Support at the top left of page].

Doesn't sound like a hardware problem, but more of a software/driver problem. To be on the safe side, I would shutdown your laptop after use, until you can resolve the issue.

Good luck and keep us posted

Is the network waking the computer up?

There are typically two reasons for coming out of sleep or hibernate mode: USB devices or scheduled tasks. Tracking down the culprit is a pain and can be time consuming.

    USB- open the Device Manager
    [Control Panel/Device Manager]
I find pointing devices to be the biggest culprit, especially if you have kids or pets.

Open each device's properties and look for a tab named "Power Management" If "Allow this device ot wake the computer" is checked - uncheck it.

Task Scheduler - if Win7, just type 'schedule', or run the following:
    %windir%\system32\taskschd.msc /s

First look at the Active Tasks summary and see if something last ran when the PC was supposed to be asleep. You might get lucky.
I found a real common item is Windows Media Center updating its TV program listings (mcupdate_scheduled). If you can't narrow down what task woke up the computer by the last run time, you have the unfortunate task of going through every scheduled task.

Double-click on a task, select the Conditions tab and look for a check-mark in "Wake the computer to run this task". You can't change it here. Right-click the offending task and select Properties to open a dialog box and make the change there.

And the final tip... Make sure that the notebook lid is not SO close to the keyboard that it tickles keys in transit. I had one notebook where I stuck a couple tiny rubber dots (made for sticking on the bottom of devices to protect the table below) on the lid to hold it just a teeny bit further from the keys.
