    Hi
I have a 2.5 year old Toshiba Laptop Tecra N3 with a 17 inch screen.

The screen has developed a sudden vertical crack right in the middle of the screen covering about 4 inches down.

Toshiba USA, whom we purchased the unit from, cheefully stated its a 700+ USD repair, and when all costs are factored in, figure 1,000.00  Their helpful message: Throw it out and buy another (insert brand name here) laptop... They said the LCD screens were typically cracking due to user abuse or some other external stress-- well, I have not mistreated the unit nor have I used it as a weapon, although at the last airport security check I was sorely tempted given their inspection protocyl...but thats another story.

Took it to Geeksquad at Bestby, same story....not economical to fix given the age and costs.

I have met some other Toshiba laptop owners  : have stated they have the same defect of cracking screens!. cool: Is this a hidden manufacturing defect or field time failure?

Does any one know if Toshiba has any hidden or unpublicized repairs for this failure of the LCD?

In looking around the websites, it appears I can buy a new LCD screen and probably attempt to disassemble and repair for 500 or so...

If any one can offer any advise or assistance, it would be wonderful.

It just seems wasteful to toss out a working laptop due to the screen failing...

You could always turn it into a nice, thin desktop by using an external monitor and removing the laptop's lid and just using the keyboard and touch pad :) . Anyway, I don't think Toshiba has any unpublicized repairs for this screen cracking problem.
