    Hi,
I can't understand, according to the Satellite M30, the Mutli-speed DVD burner should burn DVD-R at 4X.
So far, I try several discs and couldn't burn at 4x only 2x....
    Any clue....
    I'm using Nero...
Is there a driver or some can of update I should install?

    Thanks...

    There's a couple possibilities.

    1. The discs only support 2X burning
    2. Firmware on the drive needs to be upgraded

As VB said check the media. There's software that checks the manufacturers info and tells you the speed it is rated for if it doesn't clearly states it on the media itself.

    Download here http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Go onto Toshiba's Site and check to see whether there are any updates for your specific system.

Also look in the burner program or device manager to see what your drive manufacturer and model # is and check their website if the have an update that you can flash the firmware with.

Laptop drives burn slower than their desktop counterparts. I had a 4x NEC ND-5500A. It burned a 4x dvd between 18-20 minutes. It used Z-CLV meaning it broke the disc into three zones. The first zone burns at 2.4x, the middle at about 3x and the last at 4x resulting in a 20 minute burn time. Desktop drives burn the disc at 4x start to finish that is why they are faster. Definetly, try some different media. You may get some better results, but I would not expect results like a desktop drive. Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi Chemical are widely considered to be the best available. You can use DVD Identifier to find out who makes the disc and look them up on videohelp.com. What it says on the box, does not indicate who makes the discs. Quality varies greatly.

If it is the 4x Toshiba drive, I know there was a firmware update available. The orginal firmware had poor media support. Generally, laptop dvd burners don't get a lot of firmware support. Good Luck.
