In "normal" mode, it simply locks up after one to five minutes, screen freezes. I've tried restoring XP, spin-rite on the HD (though chkdsk finds no problems,) swapped RAM, replaced heat sink compound for the CPU...
In "safe" mode with networking, it'll generally run a couple of hours before freezing.
This laptop's almost 3 years old and has been used and carried around a lot, so I feel I got my money's worth. I have a new machine on order, but trying to decide what to do with the old one. Sell for parts on ebay? Try buying a new HD? I'd love to get it working and give it to my daughter, just don't know if its practical. How much time/effort do I want to spend on something that may or may not work?

sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
If you have elilminated the RAM, and HDD as problems, what remains are the mobo and the processor(very unlikely, both).. Try putting in another HDD, if you have one lying around..

You could try running a hardware stress test to see what device is at fault.
