Won't boot. We get an error message about windows detecting a virus or similar and not wanting to boot to avoid damage. Tried to reload OS (7/64 HP) and it can't find the HDD. Tried a different HDD and it still can't find it. The error message also suggested the HDD controller might be the culprit. Any ideas on a path to trouble shoot?

have you tried the 'safe mode' log in?

Yes. There is a significant time delay in the boot process as well, maybe 5 minutes. Thanks for the reply. We're going to trash it and build the kid a desktop. It went 4 years. Not too shabby.

I suggest you to update or reset the BIOS by disconnecting the CMOS battery before throwing it away! then sell it later for $600!

How much plastic comes off to reach the CMOS bat?

Not sure how many steps are required, but here is a user made disassembly guide to help you out if you decide to take on the challenge.

I'm thinking it needs a new mobo. Best place to get one if I wanted to go for it?
