my 8700m gt 512mb on toshiba satellite x200 came with default 700mhz memory clock speed and it cant be OC'ed because of the 160 nvidia release drivers (163.69), though its written on nvidia site that its 800mhz by default  any suggestions?

I would suggest just getting a driver that allows OC'ing, like the 163.44 or a 158 driver. It's not at all unusual for companies to slightly downclock from nVidia's specs.

just so you know, its not a high end card and if you up the resolution it will drop dramatically in frame rates...try running it at 1280x800 or lower and it will run alot better. also 100mhz in mem wont make a huge difference, i doubt you would even be able to notice it.

I monitored the temp on the 8700M GT on my X205-9349 and it idles at around 46c, I haven't checked the load temps yet.

Stop saying the resolution... It's not the resolution!
I am using X205, if you have a 8700M GT but not a Toshiba, please try WIC and see if this is a toshiba-only problem...

If I set the graphic details to medium - lower, I can play at smooth high fps, whether I set to lower or higher resolutions.

The minutes I set the graphic details to high, the fps drop drastically and stutter even for lower resolutions of 1024x640!!!

are you actually joking? of course the resolution affects it! try running it at native and compare! there is alot more for the graphics card to render. 1440x900 has 12960000 pixels. 1024x768 has 786432 pixels. Thats 40% more pixels, and possibly updating your drivers would help if you havent done so allready.

Maybe Toshiba downclocked the core and mems to increase the duration on battery power...

The 8700M GT used on my M570RU have 675Mhz on the core, shader 1350Mhz and 800Mhz on the mems.

In the future I´m planning to flash the VBIOS to increase the core and mem frequencies... I think that VBIOS flash is only available on systems with MXM module, so I think that VBIOS flash is not possible on the X205... It´s a matter of trying.

    ;)

How does your clevo with 8700M handle the high res screen?

Can you play games at 1920x1080 res?

Damm my Toshiba's 8700M GT is shown by nVidia's nTune
to have gpu core clock of just 625MHz,
and memory clock of just 702MHz.

However, the official 8700M GT specs from nVidia says the stock Memory clock is 800MHz!!!
    See http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8700m.html

How can by Toshiba short-change us of more than 100Mhz of bandwidth if they marketed it as the official nVidia's 8700M GT??

It's not suprising, on most cards most manufacturers dowclock the GPU's slightly. It's not a huge deal. If you really want to, you can OC it back to stock clocks.

What can't Toshiba set the official factory defaults as published by nVidia: 625/ 800!

ColdSoul was overclocking his X200 to 700/900 last month using Riva Tuner (and with the X200 running stock drivers I believe) here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=151786&page=7

And it looks like the GPU was not even breaking a sweat at those settings.

Is it possible to ugrade the video card on the Toshiba X205 in the same way you can do on the Sager NP5791 on the future.

precisely, he overclocked with stock drivers and some of the newest games dont run under them, so due to 8700m wide OC abilities we need the most capable drivers to do it..if anyone has OC'ed their 8700m with up to date drivers pls reply ;)

Yes, if you can find one it can be upgraded, I know because I took my X205-9349 apart to replace the cooling goop with Arctic Silver on the CPU, GPU, NB, and ceramique on the Video Card memory and upgraded the CPU to the T7300 while I was at it too. :p :D

The newest drivers are not yet OC'able. With 163.44 and below, you can OC with the newest version of Rivatuner as long as you follow the instructions exactly.

Does this non-overclock thing only apply to the 8700m gt or the drivers? Because right now I'm using driver 163.67 in vista and I can overclock my laptop using ATI Tool (163.44 worked too). Laptop specs in sig.

Add me to the list of those who cannot overclock with 163.xx drivers!

I have tried clean installs of 163.44, .67 and .69, along with clean installs of Rivatuner 2.03 and 2.04.

    I use CC v2.00.500 and DriverCleaner v3.2.0.6.

The only thing I haven't tried is booting in safe mode to install the drivers. I read somewhere that someone got overclocking to work by doing this.

    I use Vista 32bit.

    Gurus please help!

BTW, Rivatuner reports my Core Clock speed incorrectly. Reads 50MHz over what i have set (or the default 625MHz atm argh!).

Also, I can up my memory/clock speeds for 2D. It seems to help when browsing / exploring. For example, when exploring control panel, the dozens of icons show a lot quicker on screen.

Come on gurus, show us the light!

    what's your memory default clock?
    - 700mhz, or the official 800mhz by nvidia.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8700m.html

also, 3dmark06 system details reports that my 8700m has shader version 3.0:
    Vertex Shader Version 3.0
    Pixel Shader Version 3.0

But nvidia says the new 8700m should have the new shader model 4.0 instead!!!
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8700M_techspecs.html

What is toshiba giving us - a factory subpar-8700m!??

    Can anyone check yours?

I think the shader 3.0 is shown because 4.0 is dx10 and there are no dx10 tests in 3dmark06 :)

You guessed it planet... my Mem is 700Mhz.

And i agree with above, 3Dmark (and Riva i think) does not 'know' about SM4.0, so don't expect to be able to select it in that software.

Okay, how much do you pay for the processor upgrade and how easy was with the bios, drivers and settings? And what do you think about the new 2 models with SLI and the 8600M?, Toshiba post that today on the site...

I am sorry, I am retracting this OC tip as frankly the results are not as expected.

Bioshock is unpredictable and sometimes crashes, performance is not where I was expecting it and none of the laptop functions work at all.

Due to the odd performance it may be possible it did not correctly install the correct driver files or that I only got a partial install due to the custom *.inf.

I have uninstalled and returned to 163.44 drivers with rivatuner2.04 which incidentally does not OC once again.

My apologies, I was perhaps a bit overexcited to finally have real drivers that would overclock.

    Thanks. That's great tip!
I am :( that I should had waited 3 weeks to get the SLI version instead should I had known....
Hopefully, the oc can improve the performance much, is stable with more upside to come,
and more better drivers for the 8700m.

Well, I returned the T7300 processor and just got the T7700 2.4Ghz for $345 at Newegg, I did not have to change anything in the bios at all, both the bios and Vista recognized the cpu with no changes. The new sli models are nice but the performance increase is going to be marginal and if you are like me who already have the x205, I don't see the justification to upgrade to sli. I would only consider that if toshiba or Nvidia would sell us the sli cards to put in the laptop that I may consider but is unlikely to happen at all.

Skylander77 - I still had a few days to return the T7300 for a full refund so I did and then got the T7700. Also if anyone is interested I have created a guide to taking apart the X205 laptop.

    Hi Jesse6749,
How does the 7700 run on the X205-9349? How hard is it to upgrade the CPU? I would be interested in looking at the guide.
