Hi,
I was just wondering, as the topic says, about the difference between these two machines?
I have tried googeling etc but in my opinion they look practically identical. What has me perplexed is not so much the internal components, but rather the similarities in compononents, weight, look etc yet one is called Protege and the other Satellite??

The Portege series tend to be more business orientated and usually have a matte screen but also look at the Windows version and warranty offered in the two versions. In some earlier versions of the R series there used to be also some materials and thickness differences (the more expensive business notebooks using more magnesium alloy and being thinnner) but this may no longer be the case.

Thanks for your reply John!
Although the matte screen is of quite significant importance to me, the price difference of almost $700 between the Satellite and Protege just dosent make it worth it.
The specs were identical, although the Protege, like you said, had some additional security features, Windows Professional and another year of warranty. I still opted for the Satellite (same weight, thickness, specs) as I am a student, and 700 dollars for a matte screen is ridiculous if you ask me. Would have been somewhat understandable if the protege also came with an SSD, but it actually had the exact same HDD as the satellite...
Should be here tomorrow so I am well stoked! -
ok just got the laptop and I am well pleased, except the keyboard perhaps. I will probably get used to it, but I've been using (although old) a business oriented HP notebook, so switching to a consumer oriented keyboard sure is noticeable...
Anyways, my only complaint is the huge amount of pre-installed programs.. Does anyone know if I can just safely remove all the programs named TOSHIBA xxxx (like TOSHIBA mediaplayer, TOSHIBA Bulletin board etc)??
As of now I got approx. 100 applications in relation to Toshiba (healthbar etc) and if it's safe to remove them I probably will. -

A disadvantage of the relative thin computers is that the keys have limited travel.
A few of those Toshiba programs may be useful. Before you uninstall them, go to the download site and check that you can always download and reinstall a program if you do find a feature missing.

How about the Portege R830 and Portege R835 then?? The R835 seems to be a lot more expensive for the same specs!

There are Satellites R835 with non-reflective screen according to Toshiba's website

the portege also have docking connection to use a usb port replicator, tpm modules and fingerprint reader for security and encryption and also express pc card slot on the side for expansion. i think bluetooth may only be on the portege as well??
oh and also 3G wireless cellular internet access is only on the portege as well
