    Hi,

I have a Toshiba P505-S8980 that I primarily use for business. Two weeks ago the screen went completely dim (no backlight); I could still make out the icons but I needed a flashlight to see.

To make a long story short here is what I have done so far:

    1. installed new lcd; tested on another laptop and it worked
    2. installed new inverter; tested on another laptop and it worked
    3. installed new lcd cable

After all this my screen is still dim! I am thinking its the motherboard but when I plug in the external display it shows fine. The only issue with the external is that the brightness controls don't seem to adjust the brightness.

I am at my wits end and really don't have anymore money to dump into this pc, but I really cannot afford a new one that can handle my business needs.

Please help if you have any thoughts!

Verify there are no "switches" being accidentally pressed around/under the display; it could make your laptop think the lid is closed. [possibly occurred during the repair process]

If possible, go into the power options in the control panel and make sure brightness is adjusted correctly.

Another thing to check is to make sure you have the latest BIOS, which can be found here: Model Content Page

Hopefully others can chime in with other ideas.
Good luck and keep us posted with any results.

alexUW, here is an update. I took to a laptop technician and he determined that it is the motherboard. He tested everything, just as I did at home, and when he got nowwhere he used the multimeter to test the output and he said that the inverter was only putting out 9v and it should have been at 12v.
