I'm wondering...
I've heard compalints about Matsh!ta drives in Toshibas especially A100s, as my L100 shares various parts with the A100 (battery and a cpl other bits) if there's a chance my drive (LG GMA-4082N) is a compatible replacement?

Infact i was wonderring the same jess, also herd alot of complaints about the MAt****a drives...wanna get a Pioneer super multi drive or something...
-
Me also having problem with Mat****a drives on my Toshiba Portege M500! Try to burn with Verbatim and Imation disc CD-R but failed almost everytime!!!
-
it's ridiculous...you would think that Toshiba would be smarter and put more Pioneers in (some have them). Best thing to do is get warranty and request a replacement drive of anything BUT matsh!ta!
-
Agreeed!!! My Matsh!ta in old M55 can't burn generic(non brand) DVDR, whereas NEC 6650 in Inspiron 6000 was able to burn in seamlessly....grr..

I was thinking of picking up another a100 today since there is nothing else to buy really (not fond of HP anymore), but everywhere I checked they all had the Matshiiita drives. They don't work...i even googled it and was appauled at how many people are having problems with them. What the hell is wrong with matshiita?? at least toshiba could wise up and which to something that actually WORKS out of the box!

How hard is it to replace a drive?
-
i use my mat****a mainly for playing DVDs, and it has worked fine for that thus far, but who knows how long it will last.
what is wrong with these things anyways? is it a hardware or software issue? -
I did some Googling on the Matsh!ta UJ 841S DVD RAM drive and there are reports of difficulties with some brands of media with this drive. This appears to be recognised by the Toshiba bulletin board where it is stated that not all brands of media will work with all drives.
I also found a statement that "This device has given me some problems, as the firmware protect commercial CSS incoded DVDs rather good. It looks like the drive protect DVDs with the Sony ARccOs copy protection system."
I am relieved that the problem is not hardware reliability. I expect that some hacker somewhere will crack the copy protection system and make it available as a firmware upgrade. -
i'm burning a dvd as we speak; no problems with my matsh!ta
(it's the one on the m50-mx5)
Dodgy Matsh!ta DVD drives.
