After considerable research, I've settled on the Toshiba Satellite A660 as the ideal laptop for my requirements:
Toshiba Canada - mobile computing - notebooks - satellite notebooks - Satellite A660

It has the graphics controller GeForce GTS350M. I read with consternation the wide-scale graphics problem afflicting the GeForce 300 series graphics controller:
Toshiba Support Forums: Satellite A500 - Display Driver Stops ...

On June 15 2010, the last posting claimed 2 solutions, though solutions have been claimed earlier in the thread, only to be debunked (at least as solutions with widespread effectiveness). I don't understand why, but the thread was immediately locked to prevent further report of issues related to this problem, including any reports that validate the effectiveness of the last two solutions.

I'm trying to gauge the likelihood that the A660's GeForce GTS350M is subject to the same problem that is endemic to the GeForce 300M series. I am also trying to gather enough data to understand the nature of the problem (which I hope may be of use to Toshiba). If you can respond to the following questions, I'd appreciate it.

    1. Has anyone gotten their hands on the A660? Have you experienced the problem? Did you manage to fix it?
    2. Is the GeForce GTS350M officially part of the GeForce 300M series?
    3. Has anyone gotten a model other than the A660 but with GeForce GTS350M? Have you experienced the problem? Did you manage to fix it?
    4. Aside from the GeForce GTS350M, have you got a Satellite model with another GeForce 300M series controller? Have you experienced the problem? Did you manage to fix it?
    5. Has anyone tried the last two solutions in the locked thread above? Did it work?

    Thanks!

Try LaptopVideo2Go drivers. Just uninstall your current drivers, run driversweeper, then restart. Install new drivers, restart, then done.

NOTE: Try the 196.xx series if you want stability. I'm not entirely sold on the 256-258 versions yet.

I haven't actually ordered the laptop yet. I'm trying to determine whether to do so, after reading about the tenacious problem that caused the main complainant in the thread to return his/her laptop (I really don't have time for that), and another main thread participant to hold off buying. Apparently, the scope of the problem is enormous, and the moderators of that forum (in Europe) are editting out links in postings that indicate the size of the problem. I have to admit, after running into the wall of censorship trying to get them to open up the thread, my view of their post-purchase support and transparency has been completely shattered. I'm hoping that more open, ethical, and analytical discussion can be had in an alternate forum, such as this one, in order to arrive at a validated solution.

So what is the problem with the GeForce 300M series?

That's what I'm wondering. I've really heard of NO hardware problems, as they're just faster clocked 200-series cards. 200 series was ho-hum and so was the 300 series, but no problems like the 7xxx-8xxx series. I think the issue he's referring to is purely a driver matter. Which is solved by simply finding one version that works for his uses and is stable, that is if he orders it.

According to the thread, BSODs, not unsolvable across the board by drivers. Aside from that, I`m not keen on the idea of getting a machine that needs servicing and personal experimentation right out of the box. That`s why I`m gathering anecdotal info on how effective is the alleged fix for this apparently large scale problem. I`m hoping that responses will indicate that`s it`s no big deal, but I think it`s fair to focus on personal anecdotal information.
