    Hello, I'm new to laptops.

I'm not sure if this is in the right place, so the mods can move it if need be. I'm looking at a Toshiba Satellite-1405-S151.

What I'm wondering, is, does it have Wireless Capabilities? We do have a wireless router, and my PSP works, but would i have to plug this laptop into the Ethernet cable? Thanks in advance :)

I'd post a pic, but this's my first post :S

EDIT: okay, my main uses for this would be Internet, some very light photoshopping(maybe), DVD's, and music. That's just about it.

I'm not familiar with Toshibas, but if you are buying it in a store, it is guaranteed to have WLAN.

Looking at the specification sheet from Toshiba I'd say it does not have a built in wireless card. You would need to buy a PCMCIA wireless card to plug into it. You can get them pretty cheap now (between $5 & $30).

I'd recommend you don't buy this laptop though... It's ancient. (It's so old it's on Toshiba's "archived" models list.)

How much is the person asking for it?

Wow $50 haha. That's a good price if it still functions.

I just found the listing. This is it, right?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Toshiba-Satelli...14&_trkparms=72:1205|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

Their claims about its speed being "blazing fast!" and such is all lies. This will run very poorly.

Still, if you can snag it at $50 it may be worth it to use as a word processor.

Keep in mind that it doesn't include an operating system. Also the batteries on these older machines are usually near death.

yup, thats it alright! so do you think for that price it'd be good?( I don't intend on using it for gaming, just internet and a little photoshop)

EDIT: the reviews said that it was excellent ?????

How old were those reviews? This was an excellent machine a few years ago, but now is far behind the times. (Any chance of linking to the reviews? You can't post links yet, so just separate it like, www . review . com)

If you have an operating system already or plan to use Linux then this would be a decent buy. Otherwise you would need to spend another $80 or more on Windows XP.

I doubt it will run a new version of Photoshop very well though.

I'm pretty sure we have an XP backup around here somewhere...

if we can't find the disk, then I guess I'd use Linux. I know it's free, but is it O.K?

Hmm looks like it was unfortunately never professionally reviewed. All of those reviews are between 1 year & 4 years old though.

Looking that the most recent one (over a year old):

You can see that people will sometimes rate something highly even though they state that it isn't performing as needed in 2007 (2008 now).

Still, at $50, since you have a copy of XP, I'd say go for it. Just keep in mind that it won't perform anywhere near as well as a notebook currently on the market.

Well, my budget is very small(about $100) I have a paper route, so I get about $40 a month...

So would it be better to find a more up-to-date laptop?

Well if your budget is that low you might have trouble finding one up to date. It's ultimately up to you and how you feel about it. I can only offer my opinion :).

Personally If I bought this, I would accept the possibility that I might be throwing my money away. It's a gamble. If in perfect condition, and only needed for extremely light use, then it may be worth it. But you may face the problem of old hardware that isn't in working condition. The sellers return policy is pretty restrictive.

Yeah haha. It's a decent gamble. Just be prepared for all possibilities. Also if you only earn $40 per month, that is a decent chuck of dough that you could save toward a $600 new laptop.

At its current price with shipping it's about 2 months of your salary.

Well, I think I'll let it pass. My dad's the computer GENIUS, can do anything with a computer and then some, so I think I'll have him sit down with me and we'll shop so that I know what I'm getting.

One thing's for sure though. I'm definetly getting either an IBM,Sony or Toshiba. From what I hear, dell laptops are crap(if you don't mind me re-phrasing it, Kdawgca.)

Well good luck in finding one. I've always liked Toshiba. Please edit your posts rather than posting one after another, for the purpose of raising your post count. Also please refrain from suggestive filter bypasses. The filter and edit button are in place for a reason :).

alrighty!! I wasn't really posting to raise the count, TBH, I'm prolly gonna forget this site in an hour :S and as for the filter thing, you just can't really tell what you're saying when it's all **** and *******, ya know? On UG(not saying website so it isn't advertising) it filters like that, and recently, they started filtering words like lame, gay, ect. Thanks for all of your help!
