Hi, is it dual lamps on Toshiba Satellite P100/105?
And also is the screen the same as on the Qosmio G30/35?

    /tretjak

    I have the answer now.
It´s not dual lamps on the P100.

Dual lamps in the lcd screen.
The result is better contrast and more color.
I know that The Sony Vaio FS has it and the Toshiba Qosmio.

if you're still interested, I checked out the p-105 right next to the Qosmio (I was going to buy a p105 before I did this) and there was no comparison on the screen brightness. So far in my search, the Qosmio has the brightest, best screen I've seen. The p105 looks dull in comparison. I'm told the p105 does not have the dual lamps or the qosmio engine that makes the qosmio screen so awesome.

    Thanks for the information.

The price difference here in Sweden is only $300.
So I think it will be the Qosmio.

Here is some brightness values for the P100/105:
    124.2 cd/m² 145.3 cd/m² 129.8 cd/m²
    125.8 cd/m² 150.6 cd/m² 147.2 cd/m²
    136.0 cd/m² 133.5 cd/m² 144.0 cd/m²

The review only in German language.

And the values for the Qosmio F20 the values will be the same for G30
    373,2 cd/m² 382,2 cd/m² 344,5 cd/m²
    382,3 cd/m² 424,8 cd/m² 340,6 cd/m²
    388,3 cd/m² 407,7 cd/m² 369,2 cd/m²

The graphic cards on the Qosmio is only a Geforce Go 7600 128Mb but im not a hardcore gamer anyway.
But it´s sad that it lacks dvi.

I'm sure you know already, but the Qosmio only has a 5400 speed hard drive, and has a wuxga screen (i saw the qosmio with the wxga), which I think is too high res for me, I like the wsxga. But man, the screen is just gorgeous to behold. And it has the sweet fingerprint reader, instant on, and a tenkey. Thanks for the brightness numbers - do they post those for all models?

sorry, the qosmio actually does not have a ten key, which is a waste with all the 17" screen space.

The screen (WUXGA) is my favorite part of the G35-AV650 Qosmio. It's bright, colorful, contrasty, sharp... it's perfect.

you don't find the font size to be too small for web browsing? Do you own the 650?

I own the 650.... the screen resolution is fine for me but then again I have spent the last 2+ years running 1920x1200 on a 15.4" Dell Latitude screen. Compared to that, the 17" is a breath of fresh air...

thanks - good info. I heard in one forum entry (and only one) that the uxga comes out a bit dimmer than the sxga - so, I've played with the Qosmio 600 (wxga) and thought it was the best screen ever - do you think the higher res takes away from this at all? Also, can you use the qosmio on your lap somewhat, I mean does it block the intake if you do this and make it overhot? One more question - do you find the 5400 speed Hard drive to be somewhat slow? Thanks

I've read the same claim mentioned that the higher resolution screen is somewhat dimmer. I wouldn't be surprised were this the case as I can understand the mechanism. That said, today I powered up my 650 side-by-side with a 600 at the local circuit city while looking for a 17" laptop bag, and I couldn't discern a difference in brightness. I still feel that the 650 is arguably the best 17" flat panel in production - it appears every bit as bright as the 600 screen, but is far sharper. The only thing I haven't been stunned by is the black level--at night, those dual lamps make themselves felt.

The 650 gets a little toasty on my lap but not unreasonably so. It's certainly OK if you are wearing jeans or the like. With shorts or in the hot summer sun, it would be a little hot.

As for HD, honestly I haven't felt the drive speed to be slow AT ALL. I say this as someone who deploys 7-figure SANs for a living. I hope to fire up hdtach and the like today and give it a shot. I don't know what it is, maybe the high bit density of the platters, but the drives are very responsive.

thanks for all the info - great insight on the hard drive and heat. I'm glad to hear that you feel it's fast, as that was kind of the rate limiting step for buying this one. I do have to dissagree with you on the screen though, as I just today saw the 650 and 600 right next to one another too. Three of us compared it and all thought the screen on the 650 (higher res) looked slightly, but noticeably dimmer. Perhaps these are just slight differences per inividual computers. Having said this, please note that I love the screen and agree that it (and the 600's) are the best I've ever seen. I played with the two for a long time and thought they were actually both blazing fast and really nice for movies. I watched a hd dvd on both, with the 650's hd drive and the 600's regula DVD player, and they both looked awesome. Way better GPU on the 650 though, the one on the 600 is a deal breaker for me. Thanks again for the input.

I think you may be right, I got to compare the two again and I agree that the 650 screen might be dimmer. I still feel that it's the black levels that are the bigger issue; I think that screen brightness might be getting a bit overrated these days. (I'm trying this on a Dell 2405 which is TOO bright.) To me the bigger concerns are contrast, black level and color gamut. I'm very impressed with the latter but contrast and black level on these screens (especially when brightness is cranked) isn't great.

HD-DVD is nice and getting better on the 650... new drivers were posted recently, and playback is smoother if you (a) enable HW acceleration in WinDVD HD and (b) turn off the Dolby virtualization stuff...
