I think my model of toshiba is the A100-SK9, or something similar to that. I was just wondering if it possible to have external speakers, meaning not the one that are built in. I was curious if I could get a 5.1 setup with my laptop.

You can connect some normal 2.1 speaker, using the simple 3.5mm jack. Its normally a green colour, and its where you plug in headphones. I'm not soo sure about 5.1, but some people have manged to do it. It may require an external sound card, but I'm not sure. Hope this helps.

You can connect any external speaker system you want, 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1. However, as Zero mentions, you'll need a separate sound card (such as the Creative Audigy) for enjoying the true surround sound offered by 5.1 and 7.1 speaker systems.

Good systems Are Creative's external usb soundblasters or for something more special you could go for the Audigy ZS pcmcia card, but that is quite expensive. The Audigy 2NX and Live 24 bit usb 2.0 cards are very good too and are not as pricey, but also not as mobile.

Correct.. All toshiba laptops expect (G35 Qosmio) only have 1 external output, You can buy like at bestbuy or wherever like creative 5.1 speakers, where the sub plugs into your external output, and then the sub becomes an amp and powers the other 4 speakers, Whats different???

Certain sound cards, like on a highend desktop, have different jacks for different speakers, such as, an external jack for the sub, One for the rear speakers, one for the front, and ect.... :)
