I found this through pricegrabber: http://www.pinnacletechnologyusa.com/product.asp?pf_id=PTM20U%2D0PMGV8. It seems good at the price offered. However, what is weird is that other sites through pricegrabber give different specs such as not the super multi-media drive and 3 year instead of 1 year warranty and also an 80gb @5400 instead of 60 at 4200. Do you think the site is wrong or they just have their own unique configuration?I could only find a few reviews which are all positive. Do you think it would be a good buy?

Another question I have is about the 4200 rpm hard drive. Is a 4200rpm really that much of a bottleneck on systems? My cousin got a new computer and it was an 60gb @ 4200rpm which he would like to upgrade to 54 or 72 but he is worried he might be wasting the 60gb and losing some more money.

If the questions are not specifically Toshiba related, please post in the Hardware Forum. Thanks.

But to answer your question, first, your link doesn't pull up any products, so I have no idea what you're looking at. I'm gonna assume it's a HDD since you listed capacity and rpm. 2nd, a 4200rpm drive is a bottleneck in any system. With a faster 5400 or 7200rpm HDD, your system will boot faster and applications will open faster as well. Also, you're gonna need at least 512MB of memory or more otherwise the HDD will not make much of a difference. When getting the new and faster HDD, also get yourself an external USB 2.0 drive enclosure for your old notebook drive. This way, you can transfer your data over and have a drive to backup and transfer your data.

I don't know why the link doesn't go to it, but if you go on their front page, they have it for 1600. I really need advice on this one.

Just checked Toshiba's site on this one and with an M2 config'd the same way, it came to approx $2100. BUT, from the CPU spec, it lists only 1MB L2 Cache, that would mean it's a Banias, but I don't know if they have them in the 1.7Ghz models? It's possible it's an older model, but if not, it looks like a good deal.

Here's Toshiba USA's custom config page for the M2.

Thanks for the response. Dang, I didn't even realize about that 1mb cache. Did the Banias even have a 1.7 model?

Hmm went searching through the Toshiba site and i looked at detailed specs and it seems like it could be a 1mb cache. How much performance decrease is that? I guess its not worth it anymore then.

It'll probably give you an extra 5-10% increase.
