Hi all;
I have a problem (hardware I think) with my notebook (toshiba M40):
when I turn it on, there is only a black screen
I can't neither access BIOS to change the boot order to boot from the CD Rom drive.
Can you please help me?????

Any blinking cursors on the screen ?? Is there any noise like the laptop booting up, etc. ?? If no cursor, and there is some kind of sound like the harddrive, etc. then there is a possiblity that the LCD screen went bad. Hook it up to an external monitor and see if it comes up. If it comes up with the external monitor, then it is the LCD screen that went bad. If it does not boot up with the external monitor, then it could be other things, like bad motherboard, etc. I hope this helps. God Bless

I've hoked up the notebook
to an external monitor but it doesn't boot up;
Furthermore there is no sound like the harddrive (and no cursor).
Do you think it could be the motherboard??????
Since I have important files for my thesis:
God bless me.
Thanks a lot for your cooperation -
If there is no display coming up even when you hooked up the external monitor and there does not seem to be any sound coming from the laptop such as the hard drive, then YES there is a *possibility* that the motherboard may be bad. How old is the laptop ?? Is it still under warranty ?? Yes God Bless you

is anyone have an idea how to fix this? thanks.... -
If you need these files any time soon, it is possible to take the hard drive out and use it in an external enclosure. -
You can try power cycling -- remove battery, unplug ac adapter then hold power button for 30 seconds. If that doesn't work you can try removing one of the ram modules and trying to boot then try removing the other. If one of the RAM modules has gone bad it won't pass post, removing a bad module would solve that.
