The 4200 is a slow old beast. I just switched my toshiba 4200 for a hitachi 7200 tonight, and the difference is impressive. I imagine the 5400 is still a fair bit faster than the 4200. If you need more than 100 gb, you'll have to settle for a 5400 or slower. But I'd avoid the 4200 at all costs, and get the smaller but hgher speed drive - an external HD is cheap.

4200rpm hdds are considerably slower than 5400 ones especially when booting up or starting applications. It will likely be the biggest bottleneck on a modern notebook.
A lot of reviews on this site include hd tune benchmarks, to measure the performance of hard drives.

They use 4200rpm drives because they result in less power consumption, thus better battery life.

oh.. so i guess its kinda good in one way.. im not paying for this laptop.. Toshiba is giving me a replacement one.. i had a Qosmio F10.. with lots of problems as everyone knows! had it for more than 3 Months in repair! anyways i bought it from Dumoulin in Laval, Quebec.. i had to fight.. but they are giving me a replacement.. that would replace a Qosmio.. plus they will give me a USB Pinnacle HDTV tuner.. since.. none of these laptops have one..

Would i be able to buy one of these laptops.. and replace it with a 5400rpm myself and keep the 200 gig as a storage ?

i already have 2x 2.5inch 80gig ext for my laptops..

    thx for all your help

You will probably be able to use the 200gig one as storage although I am not 100% sure if it would fit in a regular 2.5" drive enclosure because I think it is somewhat thicker than a regular 2.5" hdd.
