I just got my New Toshiba P200 Laptop 2 months ago last christmas
but i have a problem one i had since i got it

3-4 Times a week the Laptop screen suddenly Turn off
the only way to get it back is softly clicking the powerbutton to get it into hybernation and then push it again to get it out of it.
(Im not using it on battery)

No data is lost but is still anoying to get a black screen while im in the middle of something and have to click the Power button
specialy when is a new computer

I called Toshiba but they say i had to fickle with the Hybernation settings
i already did that so is not that

I Called the shop and they said they never had problems with Toshibas
but is probaly a Windows Vista related problem is it?

See, i have another problem too which only happened once
Suddenly i hear sparking sound in one of the buildt in speakers and then one of the speakers stop working

After rebooting Vista the speakers worked again.

But today my computer froze (only happened once) and reboot fixed it
(this could be a isolated incident not related to the above)

Anyway, what bothers me is the Screen turning off
seem to be happening at random if im working on the computer or not

Energysavings , screensavers and all that is turned off.

Could this be a Hardware problem or Software problem from Vista or Norton antivirus?

    Any suggestion what to do
I realy dont feel like taking it back to repair just 2 months after i got it
and i wont get it remplaced for another one in the shop by now since i used it for like 2 months

Pinpointing the problem could be dificult since it happen not so often and at random
so Toshiba have to rely on my words and do tests

Also i Dont like VISTA , will i get problems if i Install Windows XP on Toshiba P200?

I asked shop about it and they said
"If You dont like Vista we still recomend you Live with it because if you install XP toshiba will Void your warranty because you then have manipulated your Laptop" Is this correct?

A great experience with my First Toshiba :)

    I already tried that before
    the fix this :
First go into the control panel,
    Hardware and Sound,
Under Power Options choose change battery settings,
Click change plan settings under Balanced,
    Change advanced power settings,
    Processor Power management,
change MIN processor state to 100%"

anyway the battery was also set to 5% so i set it to 100% too
but i dont think battery is the problem since i am on electricity

But is the Black screen problem a Hardware issue or a vista issue with certain models?

It really sounds weird what they told you at the shop about installing another OS.What the F***,one should be able to install any type of software and OS on his PC,what does it has to do with the hardware warranty!?Especially considering that Vista is still not compatible with all the programes and still gives a lot of problems to the usres

I cannot be sure what exactely is,but to me it sounds like a typical softwere problem.I don't have a Toshiba and don't use Vista,so I cannot give you any specific advice.Did you try to do the settings that the other people advice you to do?What I know from my experience is that in such cases a fresh installation fixes all the problems. But not a repair,a new installation.

I did try the settings in the advice above (Except for the bios upgrade)
so i will still have to see if i get black screen during this week
the only change i did for me was put the battery at 100% too
but as i said i am not using battery so dont know why that should be the case
anyway is all now set to 100% so i will see what happen.

Are Toshiba USA or Europe aware of the problem?
and is this some driver Bugs incompatibles with Vista?
will problem totaly solve if i go to XP (something i am realy tempted to do )
I rule out linux since i dont have time now to learn something new

Exactly , I heard some Pc manufactures tell you not to install other OS that the warranty is voided if you do.
Not sure if this is to Scare you so they can do the repair work easy by just being knowledgeable about 1 OS.

Anyway , I havent heard about any Pc manufactures that actually do this
it would be intressing to note that if such situation arive one could actualy fill a legal claim against companies that void warranty because you install other OS , i belive there is laws about this
but i dont have experience on this so to be true i dont know
but it makes me upset too if a manufacture going to force you using a specific OS
acording to LAw i think they then have to put "Only Vista compatible" clearly visible on the Laptop and instruction booklet

did you get any Installation Vista DVD Disks with your computer?
The problem with the XP installation on the Laptops with preinstaled Vista are the drivers.Sometimes is a lot of work to find the drivers for XP for these machines.Check out on the Toshiba site if they have XP drives for your specific model. If you have the Inst.Vista Disk you can risk installing XP and if you cannot find the drivers-you can always reinstall the Vista again. Anyway-in most of the cases problems like yours are solved with a new instalation and reinstalling of the drivers
