Hello all. My sister has an older Toshiba Satellite Laptop that went out a long time ago, and she had a friend that claimed he could fix it. This literally happened like 2 years ago, and she just recently got the laptop back, still not in working condition after he disassembled it and apparently barely got it back together.

Anyway, she gave it to me today while she was clearing stuff out, and shes not really tech savvy and doesn't remember the specs on it. The serial/model #s etc are all worn off. I don't really have any need for it, but if I could get it running on the cheap (doubtful?) I wouldn't mind having it around.

The only thing I know about it is that the OS is Windows XP, and it has a celeron processor. The computer turns on if it's plugged in, but the screen is so dark you cant actually see anything other than a faint glimpse of the desktop background at certain angles etc.

Anyone know what model this is?

ok the screen has a faint image when its turned on, you really have to struggle to see it. Any ideas on whats wrong, and what to look for?

Edit- Ok so I hooked it up to an external monitor I had, and the computer worked fine. So this is definitely some sort of screen issue I'm guessing. Since I can see the desktop and click icons and stuff on the laptop screen, although it is VERY faint and VERY hard to see, do you think its the inverter or the back light itself?

It could be the inverter or backlight. The inverter is usually a cheap and easy fix (parts are usually not difficult to find and replacement isn't too difficult). The back light is quite a bit more difficult to do correctly (so you don't have light/dark spots on the LCD). I would try replacing the inverter and see if that solves the problem.
