I have a Toshiba Satellite A205 that was a gift from a client. It is brand new but has a shattered LCD display. I know where and how much a new lcd will cost me, but I want to know if there is anything that I can do with it until thin. I want to use the notebook with an external monitor, but whenever I plug one in I get nothing. I cannot see any prompt to know what the machine is doing when it powers up. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help me?

If it is still under warranty, try phoning Toshiba and ask to replace it.
In the mean time, wait until the computer is fully booted up hook up a external monitor and press Fn+F5

good luck with getting them to replace it if your not the original owner but i digress. it should have vga outs. are you trying to display on a tv through vga? or a normal computer monitor? cuz if its a normal computer monitor you should have to switch your display within the control panel display properties over to the external monitor i believe. which might be a task. there may be a shortcut of ctrl or win commands that may make the switch with the push of a button though. i must look this up now lol. brb for edit.

    *edit*

You are right I am not the original owner. I was given this machine by a client. So, in my case the warranty issue is not an option.
There is a key sequence on the keyboard to direct the video output to an external device. I am not at the machine now but I think that is something like FN f5, as was suggested in an earlier post. I tried this but it did not garner any results. I let the machine boot up, and the fan came on, lights flashed as you would expect it would. I just cannot get it to display. Thanks to you guys for your answers, and for any further help that you can give me.
