Do I just plug the cord into the A305-S6916 laptop and the TV and it all works fine, or do I have to open some program in the laptop to make it work?
    :)

It probably depends on your graphics card. I have an ATI 3650 and had to open it's "control center" the first time I used it (I set the TV to mirror my laptop but there are other options as well). Now it puts my screen image on the HDTV by simply plugging in the cable. I had a heck of a time with the sound but someone here finally pointed me to the right drivers. Unfortunately I have to go into control panel and select the HDMI sound, then launch my video application, in order to get sound on the TV. Does not happen automatically.

Does that kind of connection put a strain on the graphic card?
I'm getting an MSI GX400 in a couple of days. Small screen but good config (for that price), so i'll be hooking it up to monitors via VGA, or a tv via HDMI (or via S-video, somehow, seeing as how i have an old tv: this is gonna be a fun few weeks. anyone know how to get from VGA to s-video plug?)

Anyway, can i still game while hooked up to an external monitor/tv? or will that connection use up some of my video memory and limit my gaming capacity?

I plugged in the hdmi cord and the toshiba DVD player started on its own, but I could not get the sound on the TV. Eventually, I had to switch to MS media center as my default player and refresh the screen if I switched between the laptop screen and the TV screen. The Toshiba DVD player could not handle the 50 inch TV, according to Toshiba.
